How do you continue a quilt design out on to the border and have it match up...Say you've sewn 5 or so strips ( or a circle or any design), together and they run from mid then maybe a 1 inch border, then another say, 4 inch border.. And the run of mid/edge quilt strips and or circle flow right out onto the 4" border in perfect alignment?...If anyone has one of the Stips N Curves books, you'll recognise what I am trying to say.....They just don't address this in the books.
*Do you align the strips/circle up first then continue attaching the rest of the border ( what if there are a lot of run off border designs?). Then do you applique the little (solid color) 1" border between quilt design and 4 border?
* Do you attach the design and then piece the rest of the border on either side of it?

Let me try again: Say you have a row of half squ triangles going across your quilt top...And you want that row to contine onto your border. How do you then attach your border to your quilt top and have them line up?

I understand that you would just piece it into your border..Just not how you would attach it and have everything line up correctly...Thanks for any advice

Another way you could do it is, sew the top with the end of the "too long" row as an overhang. Attach the border to the top, leaving the overhang dangling. Then applique the overhang onto the border.

I believe the circles in this design would be applique. Any version of applique you want. The flowers are the same I would think.

The border continuations in Strips and Curves are generally NOT appliquéd, at least not the circles and strata ones. They are pieced, just like the rest of the quilt. If you have the first book, look at the corner of Ripples on page 56 in the discussion about borders. There is a seam line where the side border meets the bottom border through the middle of the strata strips. It just takes planning and, if the circle passes under the inner border, you have to remember to reduce it's size by the width of that border, otherwise it becomes an oval.

i did one with angled changes of fabric in the border. but i had a pattern.
usually you just have to worry about the area where you want your blks to continue into the border. make a "block" for the border and add border fabric above and below that.

oh i see the photo. yes those circles look appliqued on, but the one above with the flowers look like the flowers were fussy cut and fused on. sort of broderie purse style.
