Borders?
This quilt has completely changed from its original plan, but is still intended to be a "throw". Currently measures 46x57, which seems a tad small. Would another border look good or is it too busy already? I am a newbie and would appreciate any help. I did go to my local quilt shop and bought this border fabric as well as a white for backing, but they are clearly very busy and not able to offer guidance.
Thank you. |
Welcome to the board - Your picture does not show up Here is a great set of directions on how to attach images.

Thank you very much. Maybe this worked?

Pretty quilt. What about adding a border fabric by pulling colors from your quilt. It could possibly be a floral or a muted fabric such as a grudge that would have a hint of colors that are in your quilt

I like it!! Very pretty and not busy at all. Another option is to pull out the dark gray. I might be tempted to add a narrow dark gray border to frame it and then a wider border of that medium gray you have.

Here is a better picture - when you said grey, I realized the green looked grey lol.
The green seems a bit overpowering to me, so I didn't want to use it as a border, was hoping a border might actually tone it down. The bright yellow actually has little white dots in it and will be 2 inches finished. |
great quilt! I don't think i would add any boarders.... but that doesn't help your size! sorry
great quilt! I don't think i would add any boarders.... but that doesn't help .
I appreciate the compliment anyway! I feel like I have used my seam ripper more than my new sewing machine so my confidence is pretty slim. It definitely isn't my colors, but it is for my 82yo mom and she loves "cheerful yellow". |
You're right, that is a little small. If you can live with it, I'd skip the second border. If you can't, I'd "audition" that lightest green as a second border. It appears as if the first border is almost a blend of the center square and that peachy color that is used in several places next to the center square. If you have any more of the peachy fabric, I'd try it. I realize it's a floral, but it reads as a solid. If it's too close in color to the first border, I'd try that as a second border. Another idea would be a piano key border with your light scraps. It might be too much, though. (I've made piano key borders that didn't work and just put them on the backing.) I'd match the binding to the second border, unless it ends up being the piano key border. If I did that, I'd match the first border.
I've seen where quilters use a photo editing program to audition borders. You just use your photo and add borders in the appropriate color. The other option is to hang it on the wall and use a small piece on one side and see if it works. Take photos of the different things you try so you can see more clearly than you see in person. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of the back of the one I used my piano key border on. (I need to take more photos!) bkay |

Edit: Just saw the yellow and green flowered fabric and the blue grunge in the other picture. A really small green border in place of the blue I think would tie it all together |
I tend to add borders even if it doesn't call for one as it keeps all those seams from coming loose. Your quilt looks great and a border would really showcase the center. I try to use a fabric that I used in the quilt itself or one that would compliment one of the colors. Great job for a beginner as you call yourself.

My previous post took forever to write, as I tried to edit it and then lost the edit. I didn't see your photo with the blue. No, I wouldn't use the blue. Betty's idea is a good one.

Sounds a bit small to me. I would add another border. Such a pretty quilt!

Love the colors!! I still stick with my original suggestion (just with a change of colors (lol). Love the first yellow border as is. I would then add a small border (finished 1/2 to max 1" wide) of one of the greens then maybe another 3" border of the yellow if you have it or something light that would compliment the rest of the quilt . Here is my thought process on doing that... The green is dominant and a zigzag diagonal. A small darkish border will "frame it" imho and keep your focus in the center. The outside light border will enlarge the quilt without drawing too much attention away form your pretty center.

First of all, I like lots of color and I like your quilt. If you have more of the palest green, that could be a good border to calm things down. A dark green small border, then the paler green. Glad you're getting lots of good suggestions here.

First of all Welcome to the QB from SE Michigan! Your quilt is vibrant! The second picture is much better and I now understand the current border. I would also try another border pulling one of the floral colors. The colors pop especially because of the darkest of the greens. I like it though the way it is. Again welcome to the QB!

Thank you all so very much for the welcoming and kind words and suggestions! I ended up replacing that first border with a light yellow polka-dot, then added that light green polka-dot border and a small print floral that had both those colors and "Easter blue"; then did the binding in Easter blue. I also changed the backing from being white to the yellow floral I used in many blocks. It matches mom's den so she can fold it to just show that side. And finally, I quilted a large diamond pattern. I was really pleased with the result and she seemed to like it as well.
I definitely need to work on taking pics cause it really did look better than these show lol. Thanks again. |
A great quilt and finish. Be proud of yourself!

It came out very pretty - fresh and spring-y - and aren't we all ready for that? https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/heart.gif
