Being totally math challenged, I am in desparate need of help!!!
I have searched and searched for a block with a 6" center---hopefully a star......and I found this at quilters cache---Eccentric Star....but the center is 3 1/2 sq. How do I make everything work????????? Color #2 is the center square. Color 1 Color 1 needs: one 3-7/8" x 15-1/2" strip Color 2 Color 2 needs: one 3-1/2" square Color 3 Color 3 needs: one 3-7/8" x 15-1/2" strip http://www.quilterscache.com/E/EccentricStarBlock.html Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!! |
can you post a picture? of the pattern

The way I change the size of a block is to begin with the FINISHED size of a component of the block, make it larger or smaller, then add the seam allowances back on. If the cut size of the center square is 3 and 1/2", then it's finished size is 3". You want a 6" finished size, so you cut the center square at 6 and 1/2".
The other two colors are cut at 3 and 7/8, which sounds to me like you'd be making HST's that should finish at 3". You should start with 6 and 7/8" squares, sew into HST's and see if that size works. |
Here's the block. I'm too tired to do the math tonight. http://www.quilterscache.com/E/EccentricStarBlock.html

Best way I know is to actually draw it out on graph paper, then measure it!

If you email Marsha she might have a pattern that is in the size you want to make. She is a very friendly lady. I emailed her about some patterns once and she was very pleasant and answered me quickly. good luck. crafty_linda_b

Have you tried working it out on graph paper and using that to get you measurements for each piece of the block? That's what helps me work out the specifics of a block when I'm making changes.

Do you want it to remain a 9" block? It would be easier to make eight pointed star #4 with a 6 inch center piece but it is a 12 inch block (quilters cache).

If you make each row 6" high (finished) then the whole block will be 18" finished. Is that what you're going for? If yes, then my thoughts (above) will take you to the right place.
