I'm trying to start a quilt for my 3 year old son. I love the look of pottery barn, but i can't seem to find any pattern where there might be some trucks or cars on there. i don't necessarily want a traditional repetitive quilt, but something with large blocks, and a few appliqued trucks (gasp, applique! i said it out loud! i've NEVER appliqued) anyways,
i have a quilt in mind that i found at pottery barn, but i really would like some kind of pattern to get me started.

p.s. it seems anything quilting related for boys is a hard find, so if any of you can direct me in the right path... :)

I know I have found applique train quilts patterns for free online. Google- free train quilt pattern. You will find a lot of great sites to check out along the way.

Also- how are you artisticly- can you draw some outline shapes to applique? Have fun designing your own.

this is a fatcats kid's pattern. they only do the barest outline for applique,but it's easy enough to figure it out.

are you doing machine applique or needleturn?

coloring book pages are great places to get applique patterns. Just trace the parts you want. you can get quite a variety.

Please hold your water....it might splash and stain your fabric....hahaha :lol: As far as the fabrics...you can probally find similar fabrics at most fabric shops. Take the pictures with you and have fun! This really is a great place to learn and share ideas!

first what is the measurement of the quilt you want. go into website or coloring books to look for the trucks and other shapes. you can go to a quilt shop and look for a stripe fabric , plaids and so on. How identical to the picture do you want it???

I had gone to the library and got as many books as possible on construction trucks, then simplieifed the sketches and made appliques.

The quilting stitches were free motion, wrench, hammer, nail, pliers, etc.

This may be a possibility if you can't find the fabric.

I made one for my nephew that was a race track with different cars appliqued on it. I'll try to find a photo.

i had a hard time with machine applica untill i got my walking foot it made it sooooomuch easyer to turn and move the fabric i found a lot of free applica patterns at fourtwinsisters.com

I'm with Barb, as scary as it seems to design your own quilt, this would be a really easy one to design - grab some graph paper and sketch out a general idea of what you want, then find pictures of trucks and such anywere - coloring books (as mentioned), online, your sons favorite books... and blow up the images to fit your general pattern! Trace 'em, cut 'em out, and start going.

It's a really really cute Pottery Barn set. If I wasn't so knee deep in the dinosaur quilt (and my son was all into cars instead of dinosaurs), I'd be making something very similar. Good luck!

I made these quilts for my boys. The pattern is from a book called Play Quilts by Kristin Kolstad Addison. There are movable pieces for hours of fun.

Here's a quilt I made for my grand-nephew Alex for his 2nd birthday. I used Turning Twenty Again pattern, and used all doggie fabrics. Then appliqued "Bow Wow" in some of the spaces. On the back I used a panel I found at my LQS that was perfect for Alex to play on with his little cars. It was a big hit, and he loves it.

I LOVE that one! Absolutely adorable quilt, and even more adorable Alex!

Thanks, Alex's Auntie Bev thinks he's pretty special! With no grandchildren of my own, I love spoiling Alex and his sister Audra. They each have quilts and fun pillowcases I've made them.

What about a pre-school coloring book for truck patterns. I know they have had them in the past that are only trucks...various types. The shapes are very basic. If you can't find something, let me know...I could probably draw something for you.

I remember some 'boy applique quilts in a book called something, something, rotary cutter quilts.... they had Dinosuars & trucks. If it comes right down to it, pick up a coloring book and make your own pattern, or go to the internet... search for coloring pages ... there's alot of simple images you could trace.. If I cant find a pattern, I look at the coloring books ! online also has a ton of them for free, you would be amazed to find all the different types of fun things for applique quilting. Have fun !

this forum is amazing really.
i was so inpspired that i tackeled machine applique for the first time, and loved it so much that i was doing wild, (but silent) happy dances in my house....(kids were napping).
then as i kept reading and seeing, i started free motion machine quilitng. i'm in LOVE!
i mean i just finished stippling an ENTIRE quilt!!! shock!!
needless to say that oodles of practice runs are in order for me, and now i'm dabbling in dreaming of a new machine... but thats for anohter post.
oh! and i must say that i was now also brave enough to order my sons fabric. so while i'm waiting for it to arrive i'll check out all of those coloring pages,etc.

I made this truck quilt from the book by Bono. Turned out to be a fantastic quilt. It's a great book to have because there are lots of other quilts you'd probably love in it.

LOVE these quilts...never knew how to start with boy's quilts....
