Boy quilts

I am making 3 boy quilts and not worried about fabrics but I made a pinwheel from the June Taylor twist and stitch for my daughter and wonder if the pinwheel itself is to feminine even with boy fabrics. I need 3 different templates, don't want them to be alike. I had a blast with the twist and stitch but any advice would be welcome. I have the small applecore template which would work for one but just wasnt sure on the pinwheel. It is the one in my profile photo.

Thanks,
Evelyn

Tell the boys that they're airplane propellers. They'll believe that. :D

evelyn5269 02-24-2014 02:49 PM

Thanks Dunster but 13 and 11 year old might not buy it.

Tartan 02-24-2014 03:17 PM

They might like the Skateboard pattern. It uses big, fun pieces of fabric for the boards and a picture of one was posted to QB.

My experience, though limited, tells me that boys like the direct approach with their quilts. My biggest boy, (DH) didn't even know quilts were quilted!!! until I took up the hobby.

I like the idea of an 'apple core' quilt in red white and blue. Then again, I love red, white and blue together.

I made a pinwheel quilt in r,w,b several years ago, using only 4 fabrics. I posted it on QB - here's the link. I think it would work in any set of colors.

I think any quilt can be a "boy" quilt depending on the colors and fabrics chosen.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 02-24-2014 05:15 PM

I don't think pinwheels are girly. I agree with Nammie. Fabric dictates gender more that block style. Try one out in some blues and see what you think.

FroggyinTexas 02-24-2014 05:28 PM

I've never known a man who failed to like pinwheels. They blow on them to see them whirl just like women do. Your colors will make the difference between feminine and masculine. froggyintexas

my pinwheels are like in my profile picture. I dont know how to post full size on the board so no pics. just the profile.

lynnie 02-24-2014 07:55 PM

pinwheels are great for either sex. color can dictate

DOTTYMO 02-24-2014 10:05 PM

Why should they dislike something you have made them. My nephew designed his own quilt and selected the fabric at their ages. It was large squares in specific colours and placed in a bargello style, thank goodness.

I did this design wuth a black background, red, royal blue purple and raspberry pink for my 31 yr old son.cwho thought it was awesomeand momovesit from his sofa and his bed depending where he is. I'm sure I posted a pic when I made it but I can't find it. I alternated the panels the red and blue in the panel with the square and the purple and red for the long blocks.

I, too, agree with the above about the color choice. I think that we some times go with the person's current interests and especially if they are younger kids, they outgrown the interest or the interest changes. They idea of color would lessen that problem.

I made my grandson one using the Irish Chain pattern and Star Wars fabric, royal blue and a fabric that had a black background with stars fabric.

cathyvv 02-25-2014 05:11 PM

Were the pinwheels made with the twister ruler? I think it would be just fine to make a boy quilt in that pattern. Just get colors they like.

What's nice about that design, too, is that it's not geared toward any specific age. The boys can use it forever without feeling like they have a 'kid' quilt.

cathyvv 02-25-2014 05:13 PM

Most excellent quilt. As a Star Wars fan, I approve!

Is this what you're looking for? The quilts are beautiful! I love the patterns too. Link: http://www.quiltingboard.com/introdu...ml#post6265244

Pinwheels aren't too feminine. I did a Twister quilt with flannels that had a nature theme and my nephew loved it. Just choose fabrics that appeal to them and they will love it.

I love your quilt, is there a pattern name? Would like to get the dimensions....great for a wonderful fabric that you don't want to cut!!!

AnnT 02-26-2014 05:39 AM

I think pinwheels can go either way, depending on color/fabric.

quiltmom04 02-26-2014 06:12 AM

I made a spider web design in browns for one son and a snails trail in black and orange (school colors) for the other. They both liked them and they were teenagers at the time.

PKGranny 02-26-2014 06:57 AM

I just finished a quilt for a boy - it's from the Missouri Star Quilt Co tutorial - Sail Away. Here is a link. Hope you can find it. It is sure cute and quite easy to make. I didn't get a picture of it before I gave it away, but hoping to get one soon.

Boys that age don't know much about airplanes with propellers. Tell them they are helicopter blades. They'll understand that.

mirish2 02-26-2014 07:17 AM

Pinwheel can look masculine if you choose "guy" colors, i.e. no pastels. If you chose all greens, browns and gray, it would look like camouflage.

I agree with this. I think my boys like triangles and pinwheels would not be girly at all with the right colors.Still I think you should do something else maybe because you seem to feel they are girly or maybe not right. Oick something you feel is the right pattern. there are so many options.

cherrio 02-26-2014 07:21 AM

the pinwheel can be boy-ish. warmer colors and neutrals. I am making a warm wishes patter with dogs today. made a girly warm wishes last month. different look only because of the fabrics. I agree with the comments that encourage you to just pick out fabrics of the boys liking and it will be enjoyed.

Taughtby Grandma 02-26-2014 08:06 AM

I used a dresden plate pattern for a boy, I told him it was helicopter blades, he loved it!

Pat of Abington 02-26-2014 09:37 AM

Jenny Doan has 2 "disappearing pinwheel" quilts. They are essentially the same pattern but the pieces of the blocks are placed in different positions. Both patterns are easy and should work well. The resulting blocks are large and would work up quickly. Hope this info helps.

MargeD 02-26-2014 10:09 AM

Warm Wishes come to mind, plus sometimes a simple 9-patch with a plain square of fabric with a theme or hobby that they enjoy.

I'm making this with flannels. It is very male looking. I think using plaids helps a lot. This quilt isn't finished. I have to put on piano keys and another border before I send it to the LAQ. It has so much red, but it reads as male, don't you think?

IBQUILTIN 02-26-2014 11:25 AM

I have two DGS's those ages, and I did bricks and mortar for their quilts. I used flannel and a lot of plaids and reds and browns. They both love them

pw6 02-26-2014 11:55 AM

no I use the pinwheel for boys all the time, you can also use boats, fine patch, 16 patch etc, just things that you would not think to girlie, it is hard sometimes to make that choice..LOL.. good luck.. don't think I would make the same as the Daughter's design

Halo 02-26-2014 12:51 PM

The DP4 or DP9 patch blocks would also be great for boy quilts. It all depends on fabric choices if it is to be a girly or boy quilt. With the choice of your fabrics, just about any pattern would work.

KyKaren1949 02-26-2014 02:39 PM

For that age, a Turning Twenty would be nice.

oldtisme 02-26-2014 07:05 PM

cathyvv, your 1st quilt is beautiful, I studied it to find all the different designs that was fun for me to do being a beginner. I wish my 1st quilt would have been that nice.....I wish my quilts now look that good.

oldtisme 02-26-2014 07:45 PM

DebbieJJ is the quilt in your avitar your design or is it available as a pattern? My son would love it.

I just finished a Skateboard quilt, using the big prints. They are so much fun to make too.

Pinwheels would look really cool with space fabrics.
