A good all-purpose answer that even Miss Manners would approve of -
"how kind of you to be concerned." Good for all sorts of situations. |

Although her conversation may seem strange, it's also best not to gossip. There are a lot of people who read this board, not just members. And there are more than two kinds of quilters ('One of those' versus 'one of the other type.') We all have talents and our own special insights. And most likely, everyone, EVERYONE, has said something at one point in their lives that somebody else might have construed as being rude. In ourselves, we chalk it up to the circumstances. In others, we immediately chalk it up to their personality. |
I always respond with "I don't know" when asked what I'm making simply because I usually don't like discussing it with perfect strangers.

I run into people weird too and I make a game out of it. When they seem to overstep with questions I start making things up.
I act weirder then they do, you can see it in their eyes how they think how can I get away from her. My DD told one nosy person who wanted to know why she wore jewelry when people didn't have money to buy food, that all her jewelry was found at the dump that she goes too every week and spends all day searching for stuff. She told the woman to have all the people she knew that needed money to go search in the dump for diamond jewelry. LOL |
very odd. I wonder why that bothered her so much?

I try to understand that sometimes people are lonely or have medical reasons that they say or do the type of thing you're talking about. However, I don't particularly like it when someone asks me what I'm going to make with the fabric I have selected. Another thing I've noticed is when I'm checking out with groceries clerks will ask what I'm going to make or the comment the other day "well, I'll be at your house for dinner tonight because you're making vegetable soup."
A couple of years ago there was a woman ahead of me paying for her fabric she'd had cut. I live in Ohio and there is a big football rivalry between Ohio State and University of Michigan. I have a son who is a Michigan fan and I had fabric to make him a wall hanging. She started talking in a very loud voice and pointed at me for being a "traitor." I was so shocked, being that we were in a quilt shop, but I managed to reply that "you know, it's only a football game." She muttered something else and everyone just looked at me shaking their heads. |

I have talked to people in passing and if I see a fabric that I really like in their cart I will tell them that I love that fabric. They are probably weirded out be my also, but that is okay. I have two little kids and I am a stay at home mommy, I just like to talk to adults in passing even if it is to say that I love that fabric they have in their cart. So Sorry to all those I come across and say something to. I don't mean to offend or creep you out. I just need adult conversation once in a while. Talking to kids can get tiring some days.
