I know this sounds strange, but I am in a group that knits or crochets scarves for women in battered women's shelters. I was thinking that if I made long strips of various fabrics of all the same weight and with the sides sewn shut over a sort of light batting, I could then braid them into a beautiful multicolored scarf for the women in the shelter. I haven't tried it yet. Has anyone done something like this? How did it work out? Suggestions?

sounds interesting you might like this site for chenille scarves http://www.ehow.com/how_4839248_make...lle-scarf.html

Or a rag quilt type of scarf. I've been thinking on this one. Cut squares just like for a quilt, sew together, toss in the dryer....and see what happens.. I think they'd be cute!

Sounds neat.

I made a quilted scarf for a Christmas gift this year , the girl I made it for really seemed to like it

Like a Rapunzel scarf (http://www.craftster.org/blog/wear-i...rapunzel-scarf)? I'd be tempted to use strips of fleece as well, to soften it up and provide extra warmth, but it sounds like a neat idea; post pics when you are done!

Are you thinking of braiding as in the way hair is braided, if so you probably need to figure a way to keep the strips from separating--I think the idea is worth trying and would be different. Post what you figure out, would like to see how you do it. BTW-good cause you are involved in.
