Which brand of rulers do you use?

When I first started quilting I got really excited about having all the goodies that go along with it, so I bought fairly random rulers over time. My straight ones are mostly the Omnigrip or Omnigrid, but I also have June Taylor, Fons and Porter, Eleanor Burns, Get Squared, etc, etc. I want to go through them and keep what I think are best, then take the duplicates to my quilt guild.

Any suggestions of which kind do which task best? I don't really like the Eleanor Burns way of making Flying Geese, and I love the June Tailor Shape Cut and 1/4 Cut, but I don't have any particular fondness for any of the others. Also, is it absolutely necessary to use the same brand throughout a project to get everything to fit together (nothing I make ever quite fits together right, but I think I'm just a little too eager to get 'er done at times!)?

Which specialty rulers do you all recommend?

EB way of flying geese ruler is too confusing to me. I don't like to spend money on rulers and templates if I can find another way. I have some of the same you have listed and a few others. I was going to purchase the Deb Tucker Hunter's Star but have found another way to make it. Squares and hst. I 'm good with those. I look through old (couple) books I have. I try to work with what I have.

i do compare the accuracy from one brand to the next but may be off a scant 1/16" in most cases. I was going to pick up the 6x24" ruler but i have a metal yardstick and square ends with my yardstick and 6x12 or 12x12". Right now I have plenty. Not enough of an expert to do the fancy dance ones. If all else fails I can paper piece or move onto something else.

My favorite rulers are the Salem one. The lines are thin and that's easier for me to get the ruler correctly lined up with the fabric.

bearisgray 01-23-2015 10:02 AM

I have laid my rulers on top of each other and aligned the lines. Most of them do match up.

The ones I have now that I actively dislike are the Quiltrr's Rule ones becauikse of the thickness of the grids that are used for the measurement lines.

Many people love the Creative Grids line of rulers. I prefer the ones with fewer markings ( sometimes I get easily confused) like the Olfa frosted rulers.

As far as which to keep - which ones do you prefer? Or like the least?

When I started, there was little choice for rulers. Now it seems like something new is being introduced quite often.

If you go to YouTube McCall's has a video for "No Waste flying geese Dutchman's puzzle." I like it and it's just sew simple.

I don't have any 'specialty' rulers other than two triangles, 45º and 60º. I've never encounted a shape that I can't cut accurately without one and I hate 'single-task' tools. As for favorite brand, it has to be Olfa Frosted Advantage...thinnest lines, non-slip, most accurate cuts, easiest to see through on all fabrics. Omni-Grid and Omni-Grip drive me to distraction so I gave them away almost immediately.

Keep the ones that work best for you and get rid of the rest. I'm sure they'll be much appreciated by others. And, in my experience, using the same ruler during cutting does increase accuracy, all else being equal.

Onebyone 01-23-2015 11:54 AM

I have all brands but I really like Creative Grids rulers. I buy specialty rulers and keep them with the book or pattern I use them for. I prefer to use my Go to cut basic shapes.

ManiacQuilter2 01-23-2015 12:53 PM

I have basically Omnigrid rulers because those were the first acrylic that were sold to quilters. I have a June Taylor Shape Cut Pro that I don't like having to fight to get my rotary cutter in the slots.

I made a quilt that had a couple of hundred flying geese and I LOVED EB method because if you stitching off just a bit, you can fix it before the final trimming. Just have to pull out an old book of her's to find out the size of squares I need to cut. Saw something recently on F&P which was even more confusing for making the geese.

I have Creative Grids and some of Deb Tucker speciality rulers. I won't buy any other brands. Did that and won't do it again. Yes, it is best to use the same brand of ruler throughout a project. Too much difference in the markings. You'd think an inch would be an inch on everthing. But the width of the markings sure change dimensions in measuring.

HouseDragon 01-23-2015 01:43 PM

I like my Creative Grids rulers the best out of the several brands I bought before attending a quilt show and discovering Creative Grids.

I love EB Flying Honkers rulers and have all of them. I just used her rulers to make 32 Flying Geese. Easy peasy! :D

Deb watkins 01-23-2015 03:10 PM

I have several of Deb Tucker's rulers and refer the Olfa rulers because they have a frosting of sorts which makes it easier FOR ME to see on light and dark fabrics.

MFord 01-23-2015 04:34 PM

Went and looked again - I don't have any Creative Grids or Deb Tucker. Guess I'll have to buy more instead of getting rid of any of them!

IrishNY 01-23-2015 04:42 PM

I like Creative Grids rulers a lot. I also switch between different rulers by different manufacturers all the time in the same project. Never had a problem.

Once again, agree wholeheartedly!! I've also gotten rid of all but my Olfa Frosted rulers.

many optima(like these the most for basic rulers), simplicity EZ(have a ton of these), a couple deb tucker rulers, and creative girds I haven't tried, and my fave JT shape cut for stips

0tis 01-23-2015 06:45 PM

I think I bought whatever was available when I needed it. When I started quilting - I really didn't know how much I would like this hobby so I purchased a ruler at Walmart - I just finally stopped using that ruler because the markings were rubbed off and I couldn't read it (it was about 5 or 6 yrs old) so I bought another one. I have bought a couple of specialty rulers: Dresden ruler, tri-recs, hex n more ruler, set of square up rulers, and one circle cut ruler. That is about it for my rulers. (It sounds like a lot but it really isn't) I don't think you need anything fancy - you just need to use them.

marand 01-23-2015 06:50 PM

I recently updated my ruler stash to mostly Creative Grids. They are consistent and easy to use. I have a few specialty rulers that I purchased for classes I attended or specific projects.

I hate 'single-task' tools.
That's funny. I've never given a second thought to single task tools.

I have several different brands thanks to inheriting Margaret's when she went into the nursing home. The only one I'm not particularly fond of is the one that apparently was her favorite as it is quite worn. It is very thick and clunky and the grid catches on the edge of the fabric so it does not slide smoothly to position accurately. There are several specialty ones that I haven't had occasion to use yet. Mostly I just use my 6x24 June Taylor that I got shortly after I started quilting.

paoberle 01-25-2015 05:41 AM

Only you can decide what rulers you want to use or need.

jothesewer2 01-25-2015 07:49 AM

I don't have Sullivan rulers, but do they sharpen the cutter blade with each cut as is on the wrapper? They look like nice rulers.

I don't like the ones with the yellow over the markings, like Omnigrid.
I have a Betty Gall 24 X 6.5 ruler that I really love. Just have to make sure I know it is 6.5, not 6 inch. But the markings wore off. I can still use it if I use the markings on the mat. That ruler is 30 or more years old. My first love!
The one I really like is Quilt Sense. I have a 3 X 9 inch, which is soooo handy when trimming small things. Has very thin black lines. I haven't seen these in the stores much.
My Optima 12.5 square has thin black lines on one side, and thin yellow lines on the back. I love that one. Useful on light or dark fabrics.
My friend has one with thin white lines. I would like that if I bought another one. For a while, I bought a new ruler at each class; not necessarily needed for that class, but one I thought I would use. My latest is Creative Grids 60º Equilateral Triangle by Rachel Cross. Has alternate black and white thin lines. Works very well on my curent project: cutting triangles.

feffertim 01-25-2015 08:25 AM

I think the creative grids rulers are the best on the market. My LQS uses them and now I'm hooked. They are wonderful

Quilty-Louise 01-25-2015 08:35 AM

I have a couple June Tailor, MANY MANY OmniGrid/Grip 1 6x12, the rest are
the square sizes from 2" to 20", than I have 2 sizes of the TrueCut 6x24 & 3x18.
My MOST used rulers are my O'Lipfa rulers ABSOLUTELY LOVE the lip on them
to help me keep them straight I have the 3x18, 5x24 & 4x36.

I have sooooooooo many rulers that if I never bought another one I would
be just fine.

Of course I have given thoughts to downsizing my stash of rulers, but haven't
quite gotten to that stage yet.

Girlfriend 01-25-2015 10:09 AM

My go to rulers are the Olfa frosted and Bloc Loc for making HST's. Can't piece without these.

Mariposa 01-25-2015 10:24 AM

My go-to rulers are the Omnigrid/Omnigrip ones. I love them!!
I have misc. ones like a half hexie and binding/strip one from M*QC, and a set of Tri-Recs (from ??)

Quilty-Louise 01-25-2015 11:41 AM

I have several other rulers that are not square or rectangle.

One is the June Tailor "You Hexie Thing" that starts can make
1-1/2" up to 6" FINISHED size. So far never used it in fact I
just now took the plastic wrap off it.

I have many template type rulers also.

caspharm 01-25-2015 04:32 PM

I love the Creative grids and the Bloc-Locs for squaring up.
I have been using my Accuquilt Studio for doing my strips. I get more consistency. I have most of the sizes now and it makes life so much easier, especially for large quantities.

hray 01-25-2015 05:41 PM

I like my Omnigrids. I have a couple EZ Quilt from when I started quilting, and really dislike them--ridges on the bottom catch on things and lines are really thick so harder to be very accurate.

I have gradually acquired my rulers for specific projects/uses. Have a 6"x24", squares in 4.5, 5, 9.5 and 12.5 sizes (really like to use those to square up blocks--easier than moving one ruler around.) Also Tri-recs and a 60* triangle, and a June Taylor Dresden ruler (from a stack and whack class) and a fringe maker ruler for microfleece blankets. Couldn't do without my add-a-quarter for paper piecing.

Oh, and a set of charm quilt templates (half hex, tumbler, etc.) and some drunkard's path templates, which I really want to use but just haven't gotten to yet!

Most wasted cutting tool? My rotating mat. Just don't like using it.

Creative grid rulers are the ones I use. More accurate, less slippage. I am slowly replacing all my old rulers with them. Every time I go to a quilt show, I buy one.

SusanSusan33 01-27-2015 07:36 AM

My favorites are the Creative grids. I have a big (15x15) Omin grid, but the bright yellow/ green colors of the lines really mess with my eyes.
