I saw a quilt show this evening online (it was an old one being shown for free) where the guest mentioned not to buy the "film" kind but rather to buy the "thread or dot" kind. The reason being the film kind will absorb into the fabric with repeated pressings (if I heard correctly) while the others will not. Anyone know the brands well enough to explain?

First I've heard of this. I'll definitely be watching this thread for input from the experts.

I don't think my Seam A Seam has any "thread or dots" & I have no problems.

I'm not familiar with what they are talking about either. I use Wonder Under and it seems to work well. I guess I've got to bookmark this to see what everyone says!

My guess would be that by 'thread' types they mean those like Wonder Under and the other fusible webs. The 'web' is actually spider-webby strands...or threads?...of adhesive.

Don't know why a quilt would have repeated pressings, however, so can't figure why there would be any problem with 'absorbed' adhesive.

In the show it did have repeated pressings as they fused to the fabric, assembled all the parts on a nonstick surface to make the applique and then a last fusing to place it as an entire unit on the background. I've always used the light Wonder Under but wondered it there is something I didn't know.

I use Wonder Under all the time and have never had a problem and I often layer pieces so there is a lot of pressing. Don't know what they are talking about.

I have used the major brands , wonder Under, Heat & Bond and Steam a Seam.
I do know that Heat and bond lite will continue to absorb into the fabric and no longer hold. I can also tell you that Head and Bond will discolor some batik fabrics... and it does not show up right way. I have tried everything to keep it from happening, prewashing the fabrics , thinking that there was some chemical remaining in the batik that caused it .. but nope it just keeps happening. So I keep a supply of all three brands and lite and heavy.
Steam a Seam does have some "dots" or what looks like micro pin holes in the bonding material , Wonder Under does have a fibery or thread mesh type quality to it. But I use Wonder Under the least , not because I do not like the results , it is the lighest of the three , but because it seperates from the paper before I go to use it .
