Recently a friend who is not a quilter sent me a px of a gorgeous quilt from an unknown quilt show. I love this quilt and want to make one of my very own. But I cannot find a pattern or a book with the pattern. I don't even know who the original artist is. Any help locating a source for this beauty would be greatly appreciated.

The gorgeous colors are a bit washed out, but it's a good view of the layout.

Looks like a Judy Mathieson quilt to me. She specializes in Mariner's Compass quilts.

Edit: Interesting. You will find the quilt in multiple places if you Google Judy Mathieson and click on "images". It looks to have been on Pinterest multiple times. However, I cannot access any of those pictures. I assume there was some copyright issue and the links were removed over it. As far as I have been able to make out so far, this quilt is a variation made by someone else but based on Judy M's design. You can probably recreate it from one of her books. If I am remembering correctly, she designs the circles on freezer paper, cuts them apart, then uses the freezer paper to piece the circles together.

Edit 2: Looks like the inspiration was Judy Mathieson's quilt Bristol Stars 2004. Most likely the quilt you are looking at was based on that quilt and perhaps the creator did not properly attribute the basis of the design to JM. This is just speculation on my part, though.

Edit 3: This quilt incorporates the corner geese design around the circles, attributing the inspiration to JM. Looks like your quilt may have combined this idea with JM's Bristol Stars quilt.

Definitely Judy Mathieson. The quilt is featured in her book https://www.amazon.com/Mariners-Comp...judy+mathieson but there is no pattern for it that I am aware of. I believe it was one of her show quilts. But someone who is very brave could probably figure out how to make it with some of the instructions in her book. The only thing she doesn't tell you how to draft are those circling geese that wrap around the outer stars. She shows how to make draft a circling geese pattern but not one that disappears over and under like that.

Prism, I wonder where the blogger you linked to got the 2004 year, unless Judy maybe made it more than once. In the book if you go to the Amazon link I provided and use the "look inside" function you will see the same quilt Rusty Hills provided a link to pictured on page 13 and it is dated 1999. However the colors are slightly different from Rusty's link so maybe she did make it more than once or it could just be variations between sources.

Judy does have a website perhaps you can contact her and see if she has the pattern available for sale.

I think you're right and that the blog poster got the date wrong. I just found the exact original quilt by Judy Mathieson on her website quilt gallery here:
http://www.judymathieson.com/Judy_Ma...ge_Quilts.html . It's called Bristol Stars and dated 1999. It does include the geese circles in the corners too. Maybe she wanted photos of it confined largely to her own publications and website.

Looks like she included directions for the center in her book, but omitted directions for the corner circles.

Looking at what Amazon shows for the book with its "Look Inside!" feature, the book includes entries in the index for "Circling Geese" and "Expanding Checkerboard". The paper piecing patterns shown include the one for circling geese.

If the book does not include instructions for making the layered geese, it's not too hard to extend the idea of the circling geese to make the layered geese. You need to have a paper piecing pattern for the large radius circle in the center and another one for the smaller radius circles in the corners, and both need to use the same size geese. You make a good size strip for the larger circle (with the geese flying clockwise) and then add a strip for the smaller circle (with the geese flying clockwise).

The whole quilt is magnificent, but boy is that a *lot* of piecing. If you've never done anything remotely as complex as this, you may want to to try out a smaller version of some of these ideas to see whether or not you find it enjoyable before you dive into a large scale version.
