Broadcloth Maybe?
Some one just gave me a bag of 100% cotton scraps, but I think some might be broadcloth. Any suggestions how I can tell? I hate to toss it! Quilters are supposed to be thrifty, not picky:) Thank you!

I use cotton, broad cloth, and poly in my scrap quilts. They are scrappy quilts not show quilts.

I agree, anything goes in a scrap quilt, however, if you want to use only cotton, do a burn test. Basically, cut a small piece, hold with kitchen tongs & light a corner. Extinguish the flame, & let it cool. Cotton will burn cleanly leaving only ash, poly melts and will leave a bumpy ridge. Google 'fabric burn test' for fabric charts.

Most broadcloth is cotton or a cotton blend. If it is cotton, I would definitely use it.

No reason to worry about the broadcloth. You said they are cotton scraps, so very usable. I use broadcloth in quilts all the time.

Why are you hesitant to use the broadcloth?

For my own personal use I have never hesitated to use broadcloth:) the scraps are very pretty and I can't wait to use some. But there is enough that I thought I could include some in QB charm swaps too. Yet I was suggested once by a fellow quilter not to swap broadcloth on QB, or I could get negative feedback... Which I don't want being a newbie here! That's why I'm a bit worried:) |
Depending on how much you have you could make couple tote bags out of it. I took apart a full underskirt with ruffles out of broadcloth and tulle. you can make a scrappy tote.

The only difference I found is that broadcloth does not handle a super hot iron well. I just turn down the heat and use it in my scrappy quilts.
