Broken rotary blade - anyone have this happen?
 

My rotary blade had been in use for a while, but it was still cutting fine, when this happened. I've never had one just snap in two like this! I was probably pressing harder than normal, since I was trimming off the excess batting and backing after the quilting was finished, but still...this surprised me. I realized immediately that something was wrong, replaced the blade, cutter is functioning perfectly now (with new Harbor Freight blade). And no, this particular blade, the one that broke, was not from HF. It's an Olfa blade I think.

I've never had that happen, but Olfa blades have Olfa made in Japan on the outside edge on both sides I believe

Interesting, I hadn't noticed that before. It does say that on the other side, not the side I photographed, so it was definitely an Olfa blade.

I think I would take a picture with the Olfa brand showing and send it to them. I am willing to bet you will get some new blades - couldn't hurt

Wow indeed you did break it. I am glad you did not hurt yourself. I have never heard of this. You are strong.

Sorry that happened to you. Glad you didn't get hurt also. I noticed several people here have been using the HF blades with success. I tried a package of those blades, however, both blades seemed to have bad places on them right out of the packaging on the first use. As if they had run over a pin or something, but they hadn't. Anyone else have this experience? I ended up disposing them out immediately. :(

Why not send the information into olfa and see if they can explain why. It could have been a weakness in the blade and others in th pack you purchased may b the same .

Wow, I've never seen that happen. I agree, you should send a picture to Olfa and see what they say. You are lucky that you weren't hurt.

I've never had that happen to me and am sure glad that you didn't get hurt. I've got Harbor Freight blades too and no problem with them either.

Showed this to my carpenter, builder husband. He said with a blade that thin that had been in use for awhile would do that if there was an infinitesimal twisting you wouldn't even realize at the right moment of rotation. Kind of a,"perfect storm cutting moment". Just one of those things not a fault in blade. An imperfection in the blade should have shown up sooner.

Really glad you are ok. I haven't heard of a blade breaking before.
