Brother 1/4 inch seams

I have a brother machine & I was wondering if the 1/4 inch seam setting was good enough to achieve 1/4 inch accurate seams for piecing. Please advise me what it the best

I don't have a Brother, but I'm betting that if there is a 1/4 inch settint, it is accurate enough for piecing. Why don't you sew a couple of pieces of fabric together at that setting and measure it with one of your rulers? That will tell you what you want to know. froggyintexas

I have a Brother that allows me to fine tune the seam allowance to within 1/8 of a millimeter, but it would be hard to say that all Brother machines with a 1/4" setting are accurate. It's always best to test just to be sure.

No matter what machine you have, you really need to experiment and test the 1/4" seam. It's not just the machine. What thread you use affects the seam allowance, as does how you press the seam. Here is a link to an easy way to test:

Are you talking about the throat plate settings. I just use my 1/4 inch brother foot and its worked for me

Thank you for your help so far. I was wondering if I needed to buy the 1/4 inch foot, but the sales lady advised me that the machine has 1/4 inch setting - so I thought I would use that instead of buying the foot.

I have several Brothers and use the 1/4" foot with all of them. One of my machines does allow me to set a scant 1/4" when needed. The feet for the Brother machines are not that expensive so it would be a good investment to make if you plan on quilting lots of quilts. and if you're anything like me, you will not be able to stop after just 1 quilt!

I bought one of these on AUS eBay for my Singer. The little black guide bar is worth its weight in gold. It says they fit Brothers too (as long as you have the clip on type as shown):

Thank you for your feedback and also the links which have checked out. The foot on ebay will fit my machine, which will be coming next week. I bought a Brother NX-400. I bought it at Spotlight & it was on a great special. I was worried about getting a foot sent to me at the same time but I will take delivery of the machine & try out all your ideas soon. Everybody's advice is very much appreciated.

It is awhile since I used my brother. I have a feeling that unless you save you lose that information when it is switched off. So you need to check this.
