I have the opportunity to purchase a used Brother Innov-ís 900D from a sewing macine dealer in town, for $549.00.
I have researched this and found that is on the 'lower end' of the Brother spectrum and new would run about $999.00

It comes with all the 'accessories' It has a 4x4 hoop area. My ONE ??? for you all is this: It only has one needle and when I asked about that for embroidering, he said that the machine uses one color, then when a color change is needed the machine stops and you change out the color. Does this sound 'normal/typical/? I am sure with more expensive machine you can have more than one needled threaded at a time. But for this price does this sound right?

I would like to know if anyone has this machine and what your experiece and comments about it are.

Thanks for the help.

As far as I know unless you buy a really expensive embroidery machine it will only have one needle. My Pfaff and Brother only have one needle. I have no idea about the price.

Yes, this is how my Viking works, too. It stops, tells you to cut the thread, then after you load a new color it takes a few stitches and then stops to let you cut the thread tail from the new thread.

For future reference, you can go to http://sewing.patternreview.com/EmbroideryMachinery/ to get reviews on all makes/models of sewing and embroidery machines. Unfortunately, although the 900D is listed, there aren't any reviews on it.

I've owned the Brother PE-150, 8500D, and now have the Innovis 4000D and I've been extremely happy with them all.
You are restricted to a 4x4 hoop with the 900D so you are limited to the size of the designs you can do. And it is a combo sewing/embroidery machine. I never sewed on the 8500 and haven't sewed on the 4000 either. I'm too busy embroidering on it.

To be honest, if I had it to do all over again, I would look for a machine that is not a combo, one that does only embroidery. I have a Bernina Deco 600 and 2 Bernina Deco 650's, they do only embroidery, and take 2 sizes of hoops, and stitch out really nice. They're not as advanced as the Innovis but they are classroom machines and more than adequate for my students.

Unfortunately, unless you go to an industrial machine, all the domestic ones only have one needle - one colour. I had a Innov-is 4500D, which was an awesome machine with lots of bells and whistles, but, it only had one needle - one colour at a time. I traded it for a Janome 10000, only because I'm a Janome fan, the Innov-is was a lovely machine. I had paid alittle over $8000.00 for it when it first came out, it had many designs all ready on it, including lots of Disney and my grandchildren were younger, so they got lots of Disney stuff. Anyway I'm wandering here...if you want more than one needle - one colour at a time, you have to go to the industrial version.

My Pfaff only has one needle and it really isn't a bother to change colors. I know someone who has one that has more than one needle and I was shocked at what she paid for it. Ouch.

I have this machine and LOVE it...

I would personally go for a machine with a 5x7 stitching field if I were buying an embroidery machine. I found that I really needed to upgrade when I only had the 4x4 field.

That's how they all work unless you get a multi needle machine.. which is big and bulky and expensive.

You know you can get the Brother 780d for about $850 usually - and it has a 5x7 stitching field. It is embroidery only which to me is a bonus. I like having separate machines for it.

I have a Brother 4500d and it is A LOT bigger in size and weight than my Janome sewing machine so I'm happy that I only got the Brother for the embroidery unit ;) I really wanted that big horking hoop :D
