Brown spots on quilts

I quilt that I have had hanging on a wall has developed brown spots. Does anyone know how to remove them?

Probably your first thing to do is to try to determine the cause of the spotting.
Different sources. Different removal methods.

Some starters .............
* fly dirt?
* splatters of food?
* rust from pins that was in it?
* splashes from painting?
* water spotting/stains?
* smoke stains?
* blood?
* etcetera!

at one time there was a batting with sticks? bits in it, which spotted the lighter colors after awhile. I think it was 10-15 years ago, is your quilt that old? Have you looked at a spot with a magnifying glass?

They are just spots that come with age. I live in an area with a lot of humidity and that may be part of it.

I believe Warm and Natural years ago (and probably some other cotton battings) contained seed bits that were known to release oils over time and discolor fabric. I would probably try http://www.retroclean.com to remove the discoloration.

I have had that happened to some muslin from one of the first quilts I made in the mid 80s. I was told that they can not be removed.

Depends on what color of the quilt it is. If I'm not sure of a spot, I use a little Dawn in water. Then use a Q-tip dipped in the water or you could try straight Dawn on a q-tip. I would use it in an inconspicuous spot. Don't need a lot just a little and see what happens. If you can use it in a light area of the quilt try that. if it comes out then You may be able to just hand wash. Let dry on a towel. hope works for you.
