Get a hold of your local sewing machine repair guys too. Mine has boxes of misc parts off of old machines, and when I need a piece they'll check the used parts for me 1st.

Guess what? No bobbin case. I e-mailed her, but I'm sure I won't hear back. The machine does run, feed dogs move etc. but my $75 find isn't such a great find anymore if I have to purchase a $35 bobbin case:< Ack.
The 301A. I've got her all spiffed up and besides the missing bobbin case it seems in good shape. Of course there's some paint gouges and dings but I'm going to use it, not put it on a shelf. I cleaned and oiled it and will hold my breath for a few days waiting for the seller to *hopefully* find it. |
You all said what a great machine. checked the local store and he showed me a 301 tan --wanted $350.
Seemed surprised that I didn't quickly hand over the cash. Don't like dealing there because the owners follow you around when you say you are browsing. I'm not the only one who finds this guy uncomfortable. Oh, 301 looked old, case dirty and not appealing at all so I give up. |
The good news is that with some work I've been able to get the feed dogs to move down and up easily. I need to get some lubricant for it, but am probably going to hold off on buying anything for it for a week or two. If this mother gets out of the hospital and wants her machine back I will sell it back to her. I'm still sick about it.

FYI folks, I've looked on ebay and I'd say about 50% of the machines don't have bobbin cases or don't mention if they have them or not. And not one of the ads states that the case is missing! So, there are going to be lots of unhappy folks receiving machines with missing bobbin cases.

Just a word of caution - if you aren't a sewer (one who sews, not one who smells!) and are selling a sewing machine you might not mention the presence or absence of a bobbin case just because you don't know. Likewise if the seller plugs it in and steps on the pedal and the needle bar goes up and down, well, to him/her it works! They don't feel the need to see any real stitches. I don't necessarily think they are out to get you. They are just uninformed.
I have bought many, many sewing machines on e-bay and only got corkscrewed once and that was shipping damage not misrepresentation of the machine. If you see a machine you're interested in and you don't see a bobbin case or have any doubts - ask the seller. It is a buyer beware world on ebay. If it's missing ask if they will deduct the cost of a replacement bobbin case. The worse they can say is no...then you go on to another auction.

I learned the hard way too. I bought a used Kenmore from Craig's list and did not check it out well emough. Machine sounded fine but did not come with cams or bobbins. Always check out used machines carefully before buying since thease sales are "AS IS" and usually not refundable.
