Burp Cloths
 

If you were going to make these, would you add something to the inside? The directions says to just use cotton on one side and flannel on the other. I made one, but it seems so thin.

When I have made these I have used flannel on both sides. I also make the indentation on both sides so that it can fit around the neck either way. I don't think it would hurt to use an extra layer of flannel if you were using the cotton on one side.

When my children were babies (long, long ago) I usually used a diaper as a burp cloth. Of course diapers were made of cloth back then, in the dark ages. It needs to be thick enough to absorb any spit-up. I think the good quality flannel backing would be enough thickness. You don't want something so thick that the gunk will get deep inside and be hard to clean.

Use flannel on both sides...it makes a difference.

The young mothers in my family prefer the prefolded diapers with a strip of cotton fabric on one end for decoration perhaps with some embroidered or appliqued decoration on the cotton. They like the wide width. So often the baby spits abundantly not just burps. Sometimes the baby is sick and vomits. You need your shoulder covered and the top of your arm. Remember an older baby squirms around and their aim is not very precise.

Some babies have very wet "burps" . . . and I can't imagine two thin layers of cloth doing anything but looking pretty. How about using white toweling, for the second layer?

I only used 2 layers of flannel and they worked fine.
