Burying your threads?
 

Those of you that bury your thread, do you knot it before you do or no. If you do, do you wait till the quilt is finished or as you go along. Which is easier? Thanks in advance.

When I hand quilt, I have a knot at the end of all of my thread. I bury my knot, at 3/4" from where I, start to hand quilt. And after, I hands quilt, a area, I have a knot, and bury it, and then, after, I bury that knot, I pull the thread(knot), to me. And make another knot and bury the 2nd knot, and pull/push it away from me. 1 knot will be ok, but I sometimes do a 2nd knot.

I machine quilt and, using a cheater needle, I bury my beginning and ending threads. I always knot the thread first. As to when I bury them, well, that varies, and really it's just based on my mood at the time. Sometimes it's as I go and sometimes I wait until all the quilting is done.:)

Friends all tie as they go. It gives them a rest as they go. I do a little back stitch at beginning and end.

I don't like to have a gazillion threads to bury at once. Would be too boring
and hard on my hands. Also, they start getting in the way when there's
too many floating around.

I'm with DottyMo, or I do a small back and forth few stitches at beginning and end. I cut off the threads, don't bury them.

Yes, I knot before I bury threads. Sometimes as I go, sometimes at the end. It all depends on the quantity and location of the threads. I also pull the bobbin thread up to the top before I cut it so all the ends are on top. I don't do the tiny starting and stopping stitch thing or the backstitch thing, don't like the way they look at all.

I used to bury all my threads (no knot) and then I took a class with a very accomplished quilter who just does about an inch of teeny tiny stitches to start a thread, and clips them. So now I start and end that way and have gotten rid of one of my least favorite parts of quilting.

I knot and bury as I go....saves me getting in a mess with thread ends - I do this with hand and machine quilting.

I do the same thing except I bury the threads as I go along. It gives me a break and I really don't like seeing the threads all over the quilt.

I quilt on a longarm. I knot and bury most of the time. It really doesn't take that long. I try not to have *too* many stops and starts.

I knot and bury them as I go. If I leave it to the end it seems that the loose ends of thread get tangled up or sewn in an adjacent line of sewing. I also find it boring and intimidating it I have a whole quilt to knot and bury so like the variety of sewing and burying as I go along.

I'm working on a quilt which has heavy quilting. Have been doing it off & on since January Just started quilting GD quilt which will have double cross hatching 1" apart in 16 squares. I would honestly recommend stitching ends in as you go or after each square. Breaks the monotony.

I have always used the back stitch for starting and ending my quilting rows, but have never been really happy with how it looked. After watching those two videos I think I will be trying that for my next quilt.

I don't bury at all. 3 or 4 teeny stitches is enough to hold my stitching strong. Sometimes I'll even cheat and take a backstitch or two if I'm using thread that matches my backing. I'm to dang lazy to bury LOL!

You guys are totally confusing me. I hand quilt. Each time I start new, I knot the thread, put my needle in about 1/2-3/4 of an inch from my starting point, bring the needle up where I want to start, then bury the knot. I stitch until I come to the end of what ever I am doing, then bring the needle out just a bit from the end, knot it, bury the knot and clip the thread. How do you keep your thread stable if you don't knot it? Seems like it would get all loosy goosy over time.

When machine quilting, I start and end with about 1/4" of tiny stitches. If it's a baby quilt or one that will be handled and washed and dried a lot, such as place mats, I will also bury the threads. For wall hangings, tiny stitches at start and finish are strong enough.

I saw on fons and porter where she brings up her bobbin thread, then advanced a teeny tiny bit, and made a stitch, almost in the same hole, she said. (a guest, I don't remember her name, I am sorry). She explained that it made it knot inside the quilt . . .

A kid was talking to me and I almost missed it . . . I don't feel like I got all of what I needed to know . . .

I usually knot my tails, before I buried them. One by one by one. LOVED this info!! ;0))

Depends on the quilt. If its a gift, I generally do a backstitch front and at the end of the thread, but for a quilt to be shown I always knot and bury the thread

I always bury my threads, don't knot them, just weave around in the batting a bit with the needle before I pull them through. I do most of it as I go along, then go back and catch any that I missed when it's finished. I don't like the thread build-up either from backstitching or from starting off with tiny little stitches. I don't care for the way it looks or the way it feels.
