Butterflies?

Is it just me, or are Butterflies the new favorite insect on fabric? They seem to be everywhere!

Dina 06-25-2012 07:04 PM

You may be right. I like butterflies, so it is fine with me. :)

I bought the most fabulous batik fabric - black with pastel butterflies on it - wish that I knew how to post pictures on here.

I would say that butterflies have been around a while -- I have a collection of butterfly fabric that is at least 5-6 years old (and I keep adding to it). I was glad to see the Laurel Burch Flying Colors re-issued as I did not have enough of one of the butterflies for a project.

Nikkit.u -- I would love to see the batik you described as it sounds yummy.

Now that you mention it, I have seen a LOT, lately!

Well, compared to other insects, I think butterflies are the best choice on my fabric. Next to that would be ladybugs, and after that I'm not partial to anything with 6 legs. LOL

I also like dragon and damsel flies.

I love butterflies. They're right up there with dragonflies. So colorful.

It's funny you said that... I was just lusting over some Laurel Burch butterfly fabric a couple of hours ago... yum! I'm not sure about butterflies but it just seems like critters of all sorts are really popular now.

I think the popularity of Butterflies on fabric is great. ..Since bright colors are popular as well it seems to go together.

tis the season...i have many fabrics from the 70's & 80's with butterflies too- they tend to come out in abundance in the summertime.

Silver Needle 06-26-2012 02:54 PM

I have noticed there are a lot of digital quilting patterns with butterfly's to go along with the fabrics.

Fabric Freedom has had several butterfly fabrics the past several years.

My grandaughter wants butterflies on her quilt..I got the prettiest fabric in Joannes with multi colored butterflies, and glitter....

You're not imagining things. There definitely *are* a lot of butterfly fabrics available right now!

jitkaau 06-27-2012 04:08 AM

I have butterfly fabric which is more than 10 years old, so I don't think it is very new or unusual. I actually prefer the dragonfly designs which are becoming more commonplace.

southernmema 06-27-2012 04:31 AM

Butterflies and dragonflies too...love them both

Butterflies are not new. Many years ago my mom made several butterfly quilts and she won a very nice rocking chair and chairside lamp at a local quilt show, both with her butterflies. I love them. She and I were driving downtown and she saw some large cardboard butterflies in a floral shop window. She asked me to stop and see if we could trace a pattern off them. I wasn't crazy about it but did stop and when I got into the store a young boy about 16 came to the counter and I asked if I could trace one of the butterflies. He looked at me like I was dangerously insane and went around a wall and said to a lady back there, "There is a lady out here who wants to TRACE one of those cardboard butterflies in the window, WHAT do I do?" She told him to give me a piece of paper and a pencil and let me trace one. I was so embrrrassed! She made a quilt from that pattern and cut enough for me to have a quilt also...well worth the trials!

I have seen a lot of dragon fly prints also. They all are pretty.

damaquilts 06-27-2012 12:35 PM

I just made a baby quilt with butterflies because that's how the mom was doing the room cause She likes butterflies. They have been around for quite sometime but I do think they are going through a bit of popularity right now.

Oooooh... learn how to (it's super easy... look in the help section -- once you do it once, you'll be a pro!!) because I sure would love to see that!!!

I made a quilt with appliqued butterflies on it back in the early 70s. I have made to two quilt a couple of years ago with butterfly fabric. I still have 4-5 yds of a lavender background W/ butterflies of different colors, I plan to make a quilt with it one day.

maxnme01 06-27-2012 05:07 PM

Butterflies are a sign of "NEW BEGINNINGS" so I especially like them in a quilt for someone going through a tough time. Besides, they're colorful and make me happy. Ditto dragonflies.

Butterflies are coming back in vogue again. My MIL loves butterflies and has been getting a few pendants from the local jeweler as estate pieces. I have a quilt kit I bought for her. I've finished piecing it and now I need to quilt it.

emlee51 06-28-2012 05:30 PM

I think since the I Spy quilts came out, any insect goes! I do have several pieces of fabric with some gorgeous butterflies on them.
