What pattern would work to make a small wall hanging with hankies? One that shows them off, but doesn't require applique.

I would suggest making them into a fan shape and just tacking the to hold them on.

I have been collecting hankies for years to make a quilt. I too haven't even started it yet but can't wait for the moment to strike (when life/other quilting) doesn't get in the way. Have to be in my zone for specific quilts. I think anything you decide will be wonderful for you.

The Owensboro (Kentucky) quilt show recently had an absolutely fantastic butterfly handkerchief quilt. The butterflies were folded in various manners to show as different types of butterflies. Perhaps, Kentucky Karen can post a picture of it. It's from her guild.
