Butterfly quilt pattern
Hi ladies, as I've mentioned before, I'm ready to attempt my first quilt. I'm looking for an applique butterfly with embroidery. I remember this from my childhood but cannot find a pattern. I found lovely butterfly material at Connecting Threads that I will use.

Welcome from Spring, Texas and have fun with your first quilt. May there be many more to follow.

I know the Butterfly pattern you mean I think. It was about 1930's applique pattern with wings/black center and sometimes black buttonhole stitched around the edge. You might be able to use Google and type depression or Feedsack appliqué butterfly pattern. You could also just make your own wing shapes with 2 larger long heart shapes and 2 smaller heart shape and a center ong body shape. There re pieced butterfly patterns I think at www.quilterscache.com/quiltblocksgalore.html
Okay try Googling the address because it doesn't want to work |
I have this pattern, and although I haven't made the quilt yet, i recently saw it finished at the county fair. It was really pretty http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROSEMARYS-BU...-/251319358477

Maybe this one? http://qisforquilter.com/2011/06/ali...erfly-pattern/
Or this one? http://www.mccallsquilting.com/blogs...quilt-pattern/ |
I have a pattern for an appliqued butterfly with embroidery that is probably the one you are looking for. As soon as I find it I will post it. I acquired it when trying to duplicate a quilt my great grandmother made in the 30's or 40's. It was one of those patterns published in the newspaper back then and I found it in an old magazine. The original quilt was loved to death and is in poor condition.

Maybe this one? http://qisforquilter.com/2011/06/ali...erfly-pattern/ is the pattern that my Mom used to make each of us (7 kids) a quilt like it. I have mine and my sisters just older than me. These go to 2 of my grand daughters when they get their first homes. My quilt was made in 1948 my sister 's in 1947.

Welcome to this board.
I am finding I don't like the appliques put on before quilting. The points and stuff stick up. Maybe I'm just use to quilting pieced quilts. |
Butterly Patterns
Binky's Butterflies is another option: http://www.thepatternpeddlers.com/qnd.html and this page has a lot of free butterfly patterns: http://www.freequiltpatterns.info/Qu...ltPatterns.htm

There is an absolutely gorgeous pattern on All People Quilt. I just downloaded myself and can't wait to make it. Take a look, bet you'll love it too.
|
I found some neat patterns here: http://quiltine.free.fr/page%2012_sampler_papillons.htm Look at May 15th pattern. Don't worry that it is in French as you can run it through a translater program.

Go to the website for Dover Publications, you'll find coloring books on butterflies, lots of them. I ordered several and used the pages to trace the butterflies for applique.

In the patterns my DM left me there are so many butterfly patterns all different. She had one large book that was all butterflies. It would be hard to know the one you are looking for unless you have a picture. I have a lot from the 30's and 40's. She was working on one for me when she passed. I have not finished it as she did all hand work and with RA in my hands I can't do that much hand work. The one she was working on had flowers in the center of the blocks with a butterfly in each of the four corners facing the flowers. Welcome to the board, I hope you can find the pattern you are looking for.

I'd be glad to scan a picture of one and send it to you if you'd like. You can PM me, if so, with your email address. |
The butterfly quilt is on my bucket list. I remember pillow cases made with the pattern

I used Eleanor Burns from Fans and Flutterbys. The book is on her website at a damaged price. It is a wonderful method. Quiltinaday.com. I bought the fusible butterflies from her but I dont see them on the site. They were a godsend. There probably is a template in the book and you could easily draw them onto thin fusible interfacing.

Wile I'm no help with the butterfly, I do wish you luck and welcome you to this very fun board!

The block (wiht 3 pieces in the arc instead of 4) was the cover quilt for the book "The New England Quilt Museum Quilts" by Jennifer Gilbert.
Here is the link on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/New-England-Qu.../dp/1571200754 My Grandmother made me a doll quilt from this pattern and when I saw the cover of the book I bought it. The comments with the block says it looks like applique but is really pieced -- it is a Laura Wheeler pattern. |
