Butterfly quilt pattern
 

Hi ladies, as I've mentioned before, I'm ready to attempt my first quilt. I'm looking for an applique butterfly with embroidery. I remember this from my childhood but cannot find a pattern. I found lovely butterfly material at Connecting Threads that I will use.

I have a pattern for an appliqued butterfly with embroidery that is probably the one you are looking for. As soon as I find it I will post it. I acquired it when trying to duplicate a quilt my great grandmother made in the 30's or 40's. It was one of those patterns published in the newspaper back then and I found it in an old magazine. The original quilt was loved to death and is in poor condition.

These go to 2 of my grand daughters when they get their first homes.My quilt was made in 1948 my sister 's in 1947.

I am finding I don't like the appliques put on before quilting. The points and stuff stick up. Maybe I'm just use to quilting pieced quilts.

There is an absolutely gorgeous pattern on All People Quilt. I just downloaded myself and can't wait to make it. Take a look, bet you'll love it too.

I found some neat patterns here: http://quiltine.free.fr/page%2012_sampler_papillons.htm Look at May 15th pattern. Don't worry that it is in French as you can run it through a translater program.

Go to the website for Dover Publications, you'll find coloring books on butterflies, lots of them. I ordered several and used the pages to trace the butterflies for applique.

In the patterns my DM left me there are so many butterfly patterns all different. She had one large book that was all butterflies. It would be hard to know the one you are looking for unless you have a picture. I have a lot from the 30's and 40's. She was working on one for me when she passed. I have not finished it as she did all hand work and with RA in my hands I can't do that much hand work. The one she was working on had flowers in the center of the blocks with a butterfly in each of the four corners facing the flowers. This link that susan posted is the pattern for this quilt that my great grandmother made. Don't know if I'm doing this right but I think I posted a pdf photo of my quilt.

My grandmother used to make the same quilt with the butterflies. This one and what she calld "Little Dutch Girl" and "Little Dutch Boy" were the ones she always made. The wings were fabric, appliqued on with blanket stitch, the antennae were straight running stitch, body was satin stitch. Quite a coincidence, I just bought a set of 10 of these blocks at a garage sale last week for $7. They reminded me of my grandmother, so I had to get them!

I used Eleanor Burns from Fans and Flutterbys. The book is on her website at a damaged price. It is a wonderful method. Quiltinaday.com. I bought the fusible butterflies from her but I dont see them on the site. They were a godsend. There probably is a template in the book and you could easily draw them onto thin fusible interfacing.

My Grandmother made me a doll quilt from this pattern and when I saw the cover of the book I bought it.

The comments with the block says it looks like applique but is really pieced -- it is a Laura Wheeler pattern.
