My son is going to a wedding in a borrowed tuxedo- that is missing a button. Dutifully, I hopped on the subway to the button area in the Garment District. This time I took all you button lovers with me in my heart! Buttons on cards, in boxes, in barrels, in bags.Lots of vintage beauties. You can't imagine. At the 2nd shop I showed my sample to the saleswoman. She assured me they had that button- among millions- and walked down a few aisles to pull out an identical match! I purchased some $6 a yard 54" backing fabric and then smiled all the way home. The next time you come to NY, I'll take you there!Dotty

There used to be a place like that in Hackensack, NJ, too. Buttons, lace, and such in every size and shape ever made!

That area is just amazing!!

There are stores dedicated just to beads, sequence and all sort of embelishments. I went into one with just silks...to die for. At another store I saw only fabrics for men shirts. Across the street there were Indian fabrics and at a very high end place I touched a $500.00 per yard brocade. A little further south, well, more that a little, in Soho, there is this clothing store called All Saints, and this is the window display. Ladies, please, no drooling on the keyboard allowed.

This picture came from Jodie Davis' Facebook page. She does Quilt Out Loud with Mark Lipinski in QNNTv. She is in NYC at a book expo right now and posted this.

In one store someone was buying a ton of horsehair edging. She said to the clerk "put it on our account". I was dying to ask her what she was making (wedding dresses?) but she was on her cell (of course)!

Ok Dot, as soon as I am down there for good we have to get together to go to the fashion district. A lot of these places sell swatches very cheap for the FIT students. Some great crazy quilts can come out of those.

Imagine what fun it wouldbe to work in a place like that!

Maride 05-27-2010 04:45 PM

It is a VERY expensive clothing store, but even people that don't sew go in just to see them.

Dot, where in NYC is this place? I'll planning on going to Jersey next month. Maybe we can meet up!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 05-27-2010 04:56 PM

I can't even wrap my mind around what NYC must be like.

My computer is going bonkers! It won't quit replying! Sorry for the double post.

Is this the place where the sewing machines you posted is (I want to go there too) or the buttons? Thanks!

The Fashion /Garment district is around 7th Avenue at 38th Street,
near the Port Authority Bus Terminal. There are dozens of stores selling notions, fabrics, etc. Some are very specialized and some have a hodge podge of rolled cloth. Of course they cater to the designers and manufacturers, but also to the many students, from FIT (Fashion Institute) and Parsons. There are stores that specialize in costume fabrics too. One whole store of glittery spandex! A lot of fun.

With the right person next to you, you can have a great time. If you go by yourself it can be a little intimidating but only because you don't know where to start. When I first left my home in Puerto Rico I came to find a job in NYC, but Jorge was already here. I learned it slowly and can say that I am still learning. I can say that every time I pick a new interest I discover a new side if the city.

What a cool place to visit, but it can be very intimidating!

I used to go to NYC quite regularly, but never got to do anything good like that. If I had, maybe I would still be going.

pollyjvan9 05-29-2010 05:27 AM

The only time I was in NYC I got a sick headache from all the exhaust fumes and don't even remember seeing the Statue of Liberty! Hate to be a wet blanket, but just have never wanted to go back.

However, I did not into some wonderful button stores in San Francisco and Chicago!
