Sorry, but wasn't sure where to put this.
Does anyone have an idea where I could find some old buttons. When I was a little girl my mother and grandmother had jars and emply tins that they kept their buttons in.
So I am looking for older buttons, an assortment. Thanks for any suggestions.

Value village and other thrift stores, occasionally they have a good size bag full for very little. Watch the yard sales when it is yard sale season. I like them, too.

Try antique stores and thrift or second hand stores. I always see jars of them there. I remember playing with my mom's tin of old buttons when growing up. I inherited them and my grandma's when they had to downsize. Grandma saved everything.
Are you looking for something specific, or just old buttons?

Look at the old garments at thrift shops & garage sales (I know wrong time of year). It might be cheaper to purchase a garment just for the buttons.

Kathyd, yes I remember playing with buttons in the tins too, they were like jewels to me back then when I was little. But now I just want some different looking buttons to use as accents. (some with character)
Thank you for reminding me of that memory.

Just this past summer when the GD's were visiting we played in the button jar. She was making necklaces for everyone! After they left most of them went right back in the jar for next time.

Thanks for the memories.

I buy my old ones at auctions, usually in box lots with other things. Old farm auctions have a lot because the housewife usually sewed. My granddaughter plays with buttons when I sew, she used to tape them to scraps and make pretend things. I have jars and jars full. Mostly decoration, but I use them too. Good luck.

You could try putting an ad in your local newspaper that you are looking for old buttons and see if anyone has anyone for you...I have a friend who did that and she got several responses.

Freecycle.com - you'd be surprised what people request and get.
