Buying batting on rolls

I see rolls of polyester batting for sale that are sold by ounce weight. example 4 oz, 6 oz, 8 oz. I was wondering what does the weight refer to, I assume weight of a certain area or density. What is the ideal weight for a quilt. I do mostly charity quilts and just want an low are medium loft.

Our group makes charity quilts and we use the polyester batting as it is the least expensive. We use the 4oz in all of our quilts.

Some of the larger Joann shops have rolls of polyester batting in various weights with a price chart posted. You can then feel each weight and see what you like. I believe 4 ounces is the least expensive that they carry. They also have pre-packaged batting in 48" width that regularly sells for $20 - I believe it is 10 yards in length, 48" wide, and 4 ounces or less in weight.

You might like to visit okleequilting.com to see the economy polyester batting that is used for so many Lutheran World Relief quilts. It is 60" wide and 3.5 ounces in weight. I have had good experience with that company, which is located in a small town in Minnesota.

Best wishes on your charity quilting!

To those of you that buy from Oklee-------I make ALOT of charity quilts and am looking for a economical place to buy from. Does this batting pull apart if you tug of it? I used some Fairfiled and it was horrible. I am a long arm quilter.
