Buying Christmas Fabrics?

Buying Christmas Fabrics ? I am still deciding what to buy. I aim towards poinsettias, christmas reds and greens, ornaments fabrics, holly, some ivory/gold and a little silver.Curious as to what others are buying?

Geri B 08-25-2014 04:56 AM

Still enjoying summer don't want to think about Christmas yet

pojo 08-25-2014 04:59 AM

Me either don't want to think of Christmas
But there are just 4 months to it.

tessagin 08-25-2014 05:03 AM

Halloween is 2 months away and there are already rows of Halloween items all over the place. Have to admit though have already gotten my shopping done. Gift cards. If anything else gets finished by the time Christmas arrives then I'm good.

Jackie Spencer 08-25-2014 05:11 AM

If I want to get things done for Christmas (gifts) I have to start them now. I hate the last minute pressure! I like the beautiful candycane fabrics you can find sometimes, and snowmen!!

reneaunoel 08-25-2014 05:16 AM

It's not far enough away!!!! But I did just buy 2 pieces of "pre-quilted" red tartan and a green tartan, for EASY stockings and placemats (scraps will become easy mug-rugs) I used to love Christmas, then worked for a potpourri company for 6 years. We MADE thousands of Christmas themed items, and had it all done by July, except for special orders. That job almost ruined me for Christmas crafts and decorations!

Here's a small funny, 2 years ago, I gave 2 mug-rugs to one of my Daughters new in-law family member, and she asked me to make some more of those awesome pot-holders for her! I used Insul-Bright, a super thin cotton batting and QAYG and she loves it for grabbing pots and setting them on her counter. She also liked the fact that she can wash them and they don't go all wonky, like the other "store" bought pot holders! Maybe this year, I'll make her some new large mug-rugs/potholders and matching towel hangers!

KwiltyKahy 08-25-2014 05:41 AM

Yes, I've bought Christmas fabric. I was shopping for something else and saw a panel with a pair of cardinals and holly. Then I found a coordinate at another place. Now, if I could just decide how to put it together.

lynnie 08-25-2014 05:58 AM

I'm almost done making christmas gifts.
I like rich colors in my fabrics. Some deep greens
and red, burgundy and such. a bit of gold trim.
My DH is Jewish, so I decorate in Aqua and white.
I look for those colors too.

Doggramma 08-25-2014 07:04 AM

Last year I did lime green, red, and aqua. This year it's black, white, and a little red. Black for Christmas is new for me. This year's started with a cute black/white prancing reindeer fabric that I just had to have!

Treasureit 08-25-2014 07:14 AM

My DD just told me that there are only 17 more Saturdays until Christmas...that makes me feel like I should hurry!

My colors are still traditional and eclectic. I have a real assortment of ornaments for our tree...many from friends and family and some from the kids when little, ones I made, and old ones from my parents. I tend to go with red green but I have some things I like in other colors.

Terri D. 08-25-2014 07:15 AM

I'm weak when it comes to Christmas fabrics so I should probably recuse myself from this discussion!

bearisgray 08-25-2014 07:31 AM

I've noticed that the greens and reds used in the "Christmas Fabrics" changes over the years. So that fabrics from various seasons may or may not look good together.

As far as Christmas fabric goes------------I buy whatever grabs my attention.

quiltingcandy 08-25-2014 08:35 AM

I am the same as GrannieAnnie - I have a weakness for Christmas fabrics, I buy what ever catches my eye. It is so much fun!

rhilkey 08-25-2014 09:12 AM

I'm doing a "blue" runner for someone that likes blue.

Misty's Mom 08-25-2014 10:01 AM

Guess I'm the only bah hum bug. We don't exchange gifts. The family is way too big and being on a fixed budget we refuse to pay the whole year for stuff that isn't wanted or needed. Just my opinion.

Mariposa 08-25-2014 10:09 AM

I'll be looking for a nice variety of greens--from lime to deep green. Along with some cranberry, fuschia, and a bit of red. Something with gold glitter too~

I am still trying to finish up some placemats for those who are on Meals on Wheels will get one with the Xmas dinner. The collection is from Robert Kaufman Holiday Flourish 7

Raggiemom 08-25-2014 02:02 PM

Basically if it's sparkly, it grabs my attention! Also snowmen and penguins, I'm very weak!

franc36 08-25-2014 02:42 PM

Christmas fabrics are my weakness! I love all of them. Last week, I finished a Christmas quilt of metallic gold on light beige and black. For the foster children, I made a Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer from kits and have ordered a Frozen kit. Today, I planned a quilt using dark Kansas Troubles Christmas fabrics. I have recently finished a red and green Christmas quilt and plan to make several more using red and green Christmas fabric before the holiday.

Cam's gram 08-25-2014 02:57 PM

I've been collecting this year Christmas fat quarters for two scrappy Christmas quilts - won't be done till next Christmas. I tend to get the darker greens and reds with gold metallic.

Boston1954 08-25-2014 09:40 PM

I have not as yet, but my sister got some cute mittens in red and green by Moda. Adorable.

I love all Christmas fabric. I love the novelty and the jewel tones. I especially love the ones with the old fashioned Santas on them. This is the back of a table topper I made last year.

Yes the old fashioned vintage style Christmas fabrics are also very nice. Sort of nostalgia to how Christmas was. Does anyone know a site for Christmas fat quarters my usual online shops FabricDepot and EQuilter I did not see them?

celwood 08-26-2014 04:00 AM

Hoffman just came out with their 2014 line. So far I have resisted purchasing but don't know how much longer I can resist

lclang 08-26-2014 04:26 AM

I don't buy Christmas fabric, but use the Christmas colors to make gifts. Somehow I usually end up with a couple of pieces of Christmas fabric, (gifts, drawings at guild, etc.) which I incorporate in the projects.

gabeway 08-26-2014 04:56 AM

Always make a drive to Missouri Star store in early fall to go through their great collection.

Sewnoma 08-26-2014 05:09 AM

I don't normally buy Christmas fabrics. A few years ago I bought a ton of cheap xmas fabric on sale after the holidays and sewed up a bunch of simple draw-string bags in various sizes to serve as reusable gift bags. Most of them are still in circulation amongst the family but I am out of them myself so maybe I'll do that again soon.

Last year I did buy some metallics in dark reds and greens and white and black and made a tree skirt with one of those wedge rulers. DH & I have been together 21+ years and this was our first real tree skirt! We had an old green tablecloth we'd wrap around the bottom of the tree before that, lol. The new one is MUCH prettier! :)

I'm not hugely into Christmas but I do enjoy making gifts for people, even before I was a quilter. At least half of my gifts over the years have been handmade. I wish I was *given* more handmade gifts! Those are the ones I really cherish. I always look forward to the handmade Christmas cards my niece and nephew make for me & DH. They think I'm being silly but I really do LOVE those cards and I keep every single one!

I was in a shop last week and it looks like the traditional reds and greens are returning this year.... Some how lime and aqua just didn't say "Christmas" for me. Saved a lot of money the last couple of years.

Don't know where your daughter lives, but I see 23 more Saturdays here around Houston, Texas...

mjhaess 08-26-2014 12:17 PM

I have a lot I bought last year at the end of the season. Not sure what I will make. Doing Halloween now.

peaceandjoy 08-26-2014 03:34 PM

I rarely buy Christmas fabric. When I was younger, we decorated the whole house, even bathrooms. Now I have to work myself up to even put up a tree. Kids grown and gone, may or may not be here for Christmas, which I try hard to be nice about - we have to share with their "other" family.

Generally, I'd prefer a "winter" theme, so that it can be out longer. I did just buy a Father Christmas panel so I can make a Side Lights quilt; they are quite easy, so it won't take long at all.

I'm not into fabrics with metallic at all, which knocks a lot of the Christmas fabrics out right away. I have been noticing some of the ones that are red and aqua lately - but still don't want to buy something that I'll have out for a month at the most.

Nerys 08-26-2014 10:48 PM

Some metallics do fade with washing I noticed. Some Christmas items I keep out yearround(shocking I know). And my Chrstmas throw is 2-sided the other side is Autumn/Fall.
Still looking for an online shop that sells single Christmas fat quarters so if anyone knows?

Jeananne 08-27-2014 07:17 AM

Christmas Fabric...well yes!

I have already bought Christmas fabric and just completed a Christmas Quilt top this week...still need to quilt it...but just loved the focal fabric...had to have it!

MargeD 08-27-2014 11:46 AM

I love Christmas fabrics, although I have quite a collection. I lean more towards the beautiful poinsettias as well as the Christmas batiks, although I try to get them on sale. I try to remember to pick up nice reds, greens, holly, ivory/gold and some silver fabrics. What I need to try to even out my Christmas stash is nice background Christmas fabrics, especially white on white or white with silver or gold on them. It's never too early to think about Christmas, especially as I make gifts for friends and family, as well as making items for a craft fair in Nov.

maryellen2u 08-27-2014 03:35 PM

My downfall is Christmas fabric. So when I see something I like no matter what the season I buy it! I do like the traditional colors and designs. I just don't think lime green says Christmas, but that's just me.

nightquilter 08-27-2014 05:43 PM

My last one was cardinals, red grunge, green holly and gold was beautiful. The one before that was ornaments, loved that one also.I think the cardinals was tops!

quiltingeileen 08-27-2014 05:49 PM

Robert Kaufman always has beautiful christmas fabric. I know I will use some of his!

AngeliaNR 08-27-2014 08:59 PM

I don't really decorate for Christmas, but I love Christmas fabric--I mean...it's fabric! :) I tend toward traditional colors and nostalgic prints, though, I must admit, I have a piece of glittery pink flamingos with a Christmas theme--tacky, but tacky on purpose. :)
