Has anyone ever designed and ordered custom fabric from a website? as I understand you upload your own design or photo & they print it on the fabric. one link I have looked at is fabricondemand.com I know there must be others. what might be a reasonable price for these sites?

within the last few days, someone had posted a website for custom fabric http://www.spoonflower.com/welcome, i think it was by member name peckish. you might pm her to see if she actually used them.

Yep! I have used them! I don't know that I'd say the price is "reasonable", it's $16-$18 a yard for quilting cotton. But designing your own fabric is a lot of fun and pretty awesome!

Somewhere on this board I read that Spoonflower fabrics fade with washing. Anyone else remember this? I'd hate to pay that much for fabric that faded.

I asked them that. Here was the answer:

"Thanks very much for your note, and I'll be happy to discuss this with you. Spoonflower prints all fabrics with pigment inks which do indeed appreciate gentler handling than fabrics that you might buy at a retail store which have mostly been printed using different equipment and different dyes. In general, we recommend that you wash most of our fabrics (including the quilting-weight cotton) in cold or warm water using phosphate-free detergent for optimum results. After first washing your Spoonflower prints you may see slight fading, especially if there are lots of dark or saturated colors used in the design. This fading should never be dramatic, however. On a personal note, I have used Spoonflower fabrics in my own sewing projects (quilts, pillow cases, and a few clothing items for my daughters), and this has also been my experience."

My suggestion, do NOT use spoonflower. I got swatches from both them and www.fabricondemand.com and tested both of them. SF was not able to take washing well at all, where FOD took several washes as well as in the dryer at different levels of heat without losing any of it's color or character.
I needed it to be something that would last, and it really seems that SF is just missing something that makes quality. Order swatches from both to make your best decision. Also FOD helped me with the design by email. Very very helpful.

Get in touch with Jeannie, the lady that sells the painted shoe panels. I don't know her user name but type in "painted shoe" and that should help. Someone custom made her fabric and she may be able to help.

We ordered fabric from Spoonflower with a bright red background. It has not faded with a couple of washings. I used warm water/cold rinse, regular detergent, cotton setting on both washer & dryer.
