Hi, I may go to Pennsylvania Dutch country this week and go fabric shopping. The question that I pose, if I do not have a person or quilt in mind to make, how much fabric should I buy?
Should I buy 1 1/2 yards of several matching fabrics or keep the colors down to 2 or 3 different patterns. I don't get out to this area very often, so I want to make my trip worth while.
Looking forward to your advise. Thanks
NormaBeth

oh lucky you! have fun
maybe get "basics"..that would be easy to mix with future projects/ideas?

Sounds like fun. Buy what appeals to you. You can always take it with you to pick something at your local fabric store when you decide what your going to make with it.

I agree with Painiacs. Since it's a treat buy whatever appeals to you that you can afford!
I wouldn't limit myself to just a couple of colors.
Have fun :)

I usually go for lots of one yard pieces or even fat quarter sets...especially if they match, but I like quilts with lots of different fabrics in them.

I figure I can always get backgrounds/solids at the LQS or other shops near home.

I use to buy just a yard at a time but it rerally limited me to what I could make. Now, I buy at least 3 yards at a time if it is really nice for I know if there is any left over I can make a beautiful stip quilt or some other smaller project. If you only do small projects then a yard at a time is sufficient.....that is what works for me. Mary

1 yard if I LIKE it
3 yards if I LOVE it

NormaBeth-

You are going to me "Home Turf" so I hope you enjoy the countryside (Sometimes I miss it, my parents are there, btu I left for warmer lands)...

I suggest since you don't get out much, if you find fabrics you love, just get them. the projects may come after you see the fabrics. And remember Christmas is coming SOOOO....lots of opportunities there.

Let your heart lead you... and, your credit card balance!! lol

I buy a minimum of 2 yards but most of the time, I buy 3 yards. I buy 4 to 6 yards if it's a batik. They are my weakness.

hobbykat1955 06-21-2011 04:01 PM

I always buy 2 yrds...just the length for a twin

skippitydodahquilts 06-21-2011 04:04 PM

I always do blenders/solids/batiks. Have fun and post pictures!!

Same here. If I really love it and it can be used as a blender, I definitely buy the whole bolt.

Exactly!!!!

and at least 1 yrd and more. as much as your credit card can handle as this is a special treat! then, the projects will come!

Tell the sale persons exactly what you are asking us and you'll be surprised how they will advise you, I found that they are (from what I saw) very helpful and they are used to helping people with what their needs and preferences are.

Treat yourself!!!

that's about what I did in April and I don't regret it http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-129246-1.htm
