Buying "Pre-Quilted" fabric
 

Hello all!
I have made several VB "knockoff" bags (for myself, not for nefarious purposes) in the past using pre-quilted fabric before I started quilting and of course realized it would be relatively easy to "pre-quilt" my own fabric for these projects and I wouldn't be limited to the prints they carry. I have yet to try this though. I guess my questions is- is it worth is to purchase pre-quilted if I find a print I like. It varies between $10-20 per yard. I can do math on it pretty easily, but how about the time involved? Thoughts? Has anyone done anything like this?

It's fairly easy to quilt your own pieces of fabric for projects. I just secure it to batting with Eler's washable glue stick and draw crosshatching lines or use blue painter's tape-you can reuse the same piece of tape as you quit out ward from the center.

I first lay the tape diagonally centered from corner to corner, quilt those two lines then move the tape the opposite way from corner to corner and keep flowing the lines and moving the tape until I'm done. You can draw lines with a ruler and marking pencil but with the tape you don't have to worry about what you mark it with and it diesn't take much more time to move tape around.

I think it depends on how much you like making your own quilted fabric. If you find this a fun project - then by all means make your own.....However, if you can buy prequilted with a 50% off coupon at JoAnn's - well then maybe it's more than worth the time you save. I've used it for projects i've done with my grand-daughter - and it's been very worth it.

The nice thing about quilting your own is that you are not limited to a plain old grid pattern.

Yes-no limitations is great. You can quilt what you want exactly how you want-just depends on your skill level.

I don't have mad skills so I have to do a grid.

I like to make my own since I find the available pre-quilted fabrics to be very limited, and sometimes the quality is not very good.

Also depends on the size. But you're wallet will be thicker if you do it yourself.

I quilt my own, using fusible fleece (Pellon (971F) for handbags/totes....lets me put in a lining that will not droop or tear easily, not limited to only black and I can use whatever quilting design I want
