I rarely buy the fabric at Joann's, but when I do it's because the quality appears to be very good. That does happen at times.
And when I do, I mix it with any other fabric I intend to use in a particular quilt.

Yes u do. Some lines of fabric are carried in walmart hobby lobby michaels and they look like the ones in quilt stores, but the thread count is different. Wal- mart and Joannes have same pattern but lower thread count so lower price. Check count before buying. It should be tightly woven and softer

I once owned a quilt shop in Florida so I can tell you that generally, you get better fabric at a quilt shop you can trust. I can also tell you that if you find them to pricey then I would go to Wal-Mart rather than Joanns. Their quality is better. One thing you will notice is that the fabrics from a quilt shop doesn't fray as much when you wash it as the cheaper fabric, but if you surge the edges before washing, that problem will be solved. Quilting should be fun and if you are happy with your selection, don't stress about where you bought it.

The information from my local quilt shop is that there are 3 qualities that the manufacturers sell. The highest quality goes to the quilt shops, the misprints or fabrics with imperfections--second runs through the printing and finishing goes to Hancocks and JoAnns. The 1st run and a less expensive finish and more prone to all the imperfections and fading goes to WalMart. I noticed that Hancock did not have as nice of collection of fabric as JoAnns and asked the lady at JoAnns who was checking me out who I knew used to work in the past at the local Hancocks and her answer was that Hancocks got in over their head and filed chapter 7 and left a lot of their distributers holding the bag and now many of their distributers will not supply to them. I have been satisfied from the mid line fabrics or the best that I can afford. Happy quilting

this "information" gets passed around a lot. i have no idea whether or not it's true. but i am fascinated by one consistent opening statement every time it's shared. it always starts with "my LQS told me ..." (or words to that effect).

Watch for sales at quilt shops and you will find some bargains. If you buy fabric that was part of "last years" patterns; you'll spend less but it will still be high quality. You're making something that will last for years and years.

Think about it, years from now, it won't make a speck of difference if THAT fabric was made 15 or 16 years ago.

Quilt in a Day has some really good sales on now. Some at $3.75 a yard.

Boy do I want to read this, maybe I can make some sence out of it.
