Buying quilt patterns is a good thing....
 

I am working on putting a quilt together, with vintage embroidered pieces, some new fabric and some of my reserve. Instead of following a pattern I have been making my own. I started out thinking all log cabin, but for variety and eye appeal for my benefit alone (finished will be on my bed) have started to use some other quilt blocks. That is reason I asked for pinwheel directions this morning. I am thinking to myself between 10 and 15 dollars for a pattern is reasonable, considering all of the time it does take to figure out how to fit blocks in. In this case I was not coming up with a pattern for what I had in my head, but next time will definitely purchase a pattern. At least someone else has done all of the figuring. And it is worth every penny. Thought for today. :)

or you can use the free patterns found on the internet.

Have you looked on quilters cache? They have so many and the directions are always so good.

I am going to quilters cache and looked at free patterns, it is still lots of figuring especially when I want a certain size block, so when the original quilter publishes a pattern she/he has done all of the figuring, that takes time. I am enjoying it though.

When I am making a quilt that I don't have a pattern for, I use graph paper to draw it out so that I know what I am doing. I get lost very easily, so this has helped me to stay on course. I make up my own patterns for baby quilts and charity quilts.

I agree with you completely. I for the most part, make up my own quilt designs. But, when I see something that is exactly what I want and has tricky sections I would spend time drafting. I cave and buy the pattern. Why not? I can draft and drape to make clothing, but buy the pattern when I want a quick design. There isn't anything wrong with it in my mind's eye. The coloring and setting can be changed to make it more creative, right?

I agree with you completely. I do not begrudge the pattern creator, admire them really, they do the planning work and we decide the colors, which makes all the difference in the world.

I couldn't find a pattern I liked for some fabric I bought, so I designed my own. Coming up with the design took a couple days. Drafting the pattern and making the templates took a couple more. Now I'll see if it can actually be sewn together ...... $10+ is a bargain by comparison.

Agree completely!

I agree too, if someone is going to take the time to design a block that is complicated and available in numerous sizes - they have the right to ask for compensation, and as we all know, $10 is nothing in todays world.
