Cabana Quilt
 

I saw a cabana quilt today and looking for a pattern. Found one sight and it was sold out and the other one I was not sure I trusted it. Does anyone know of a website that I am not finding on my search. I can see the concept of how to do it but would like a pattern to make sure I have the right measurements on the pieces.

Could you possibly post a picture or describe the quilt a little? My search for Cabana quilt came up with dozens of different quilts.

You are all welcome that liked the picture. I got an email from a member to go to Kayewood.com and sure enough I found it and was on sale and ordered it. I had never gone to her website before and now want the boomerang quilt and template as well. I am obsessed and addicted to patterns, gadgets and templates.

The center is a square-in-a-square with radiating flying geese in a background of HST's. Very nice. I'd work it up in EQ7 for you but that computer isn't working and I don't have EQ on my Mac :(

It's definitely HST's. If you look at the corner for each row, a flying geese block would not fill the corner. Every HST is made with a color and a white fabric.

Why do you need a pattern? All it is is half square trangles. Look at the picture for the layout and you've got it. Easy, easy ! ! Good Luck. I may do one also. Thanks.

I like the pattern too. I saw it on Pinterest. It's actually flying geese and HST. I plan to only make HST as I dislike making flying geese. It would be easy enough to do without a pattern.......just make a bunch of HST with one side a solid color and layout like the picture. Please post if you do it. Good Luck!

Oh I love its simplicity - and just copied a picture to my file - should be easy to duplicate. And it is scrap heaven!

Yes it is both FG and HST per the pattern designer. The FG radiate from the center to the 4 corners and the HST fill in the rest of the space. This pattern can be reversed engineered (made without a pattern). It is a simple yet statement making design. I too saved the pattern for a later date. I may end up working this in as a leader and ender project for the HST.

You could either do it as flying geese and HST or just HST, with some of them assembled as pseudo-flying gees. I would go with the latter. That's an easy pattern. Wish I could have showed you how to do it and you wouldn't need to order a pattern! Oh well, it supports a pattern designer, sooooo.

Using my very hi-tech non-EQ graph paper, I sketched this pattern.

The purple blocks are the flying geese. The center block does not need to be a square in a square. It's just two FG blocks going in opposite directions. I think that would be easier for most people to do.

The four quadrants that I've colored with pink, orange and green are all HST's.

My hi-tech drawing is limited by the size of the paper, but it used 46 flying geese and 272 HST's.

If your HST's are 2" square finished, and your flying geese are 2" x 4" finished, you would need the following number of blocks:

46 FG + 280 HST = 34" square quilt (51" square with 3" HST's)

58 FG + 428 HST = 42" square quilt (64" square with 3" HST's)

70 FG + 620 HST = 51" square quilt (76" square with 3" HST's)

86 FG + 932 HST = 62" square quilt (93" square with 3" HST's)

I haven't double checked my math, but this should give anyone a rough idea of how many blocks they need for this quilt.

Here is a quick and easy way to make them in sets of 8.

I had to laugh when I saw your little picture of what a "cabana" quilt was.......I was picturing something exotic with palm trees.... you can imagine my disappointment when that little picture loaded and I saw TRIangles!!!

I agree. I would put it into my EQ5. That is the advantage of EQ. You see a quilt. put it into the program and you have the pattern.

Too many HST for me. I have to keep with the simple quilts in my old age. Good Luck

You got it....easy-peasy...it just builds from center out...like an optical illusion

The diagonal blocks are flying geese. All of the other blocks are just HST's. While the center block is technically a Square-in-a-square, you can easily get the same look by simply sewing two flying geese together.

I think one an make either with those fg corners or all HSTs. Actually wouldn't it be hard to attach those fg corners. Easier to HST with one right angle triangle to fill the square edge? Cute idea either way and mindless sewing...need that sometimes
