Calling puff/biscuit quilt experts
I want to make a puff quilt for my granddaughter and have looked at various tutorials. I am undecided about size of squares. Do you prefer to make the blocks one inch different in size, or one-half inch? I am thinking about 4 1/2 inch foundations squares but can't decide whether to make the top squares 5 or 5 1/2 inches. I am cutting from fabric (not using pre-cut squares).
I don't want the finished squares to be overstuffed or the quilt to be too heavy, so I'm going to fill lightly with fiberfill. Thanks for suggestions! Marcia |
I would make a few and see what's easier to handle in the making.

Hi Marcia,
I made mine using squares 1" smaller and found this gave a nice puff. Hugs Caroline |
I made one long ago but it's wasn't as puffy. i made small four patchs and sewed right sides together, let opening. then turned them right side out an stuffed a bit of poly batting inside. Then zig zagged them together into rows and then the rows together. Queen size!!

I remember a friend of my Mom's making one many years ago she used a nylon stocking in each puff. Oh my that was a LONG time ago!!

that reminds me of a friend from a long time ago. She was a worker in a hospital where they used sanitary napkins as dressings after certain surgeries. they had to sanitize them in an autoclave before using and sometimes they scorched. rather then throw them out, she brought them home and used them to make the "pillows" one at time. when she got enough, she put them together for wonderful quilt!

I made a pillow, and my top squares were an inch bigger. When I pinned the top square to the bottom, I just sort of formed a pleat with my fingers on the bigger square to make it match the bottom square and pinned, then sewed. I think if the square is smaller, it would be fussier to get the pleat just right and keep the edges aligned, if that makes sense.
Maybe try one of each and see what you think. |
Thank you for your stories and suggestions. After more reading and thinking, I believe I will put the puff quilt idea on the back burner for now and just make granddaughter a patchwork quilt with extra fluffy batting instead.
