Test blocks are always a great idea Holice! I couldn't agree with you more. Especially when the pattern is a little beyond ones' skill level, as this is intermediate and I'm still pretty much a beginner. If I decide to try it, I'll make a test block for sure!!!

Hi lorraine! I used to live in Bloomingburg! Up on the mountain! Loved it there but love it here in the Adairondak foothills too.

I would also suggest making a test block. When I make HSTs I don't just add the 7/8" to the size but add a full inch and then square the HSTs to the proper size.

Try 3 3/8", but do it with cheap paper, sew it and all! Much easier to check and no fabric lost. I had patterns with "8ths" used before. No biggy.

I was looking at a free pattern for a quilt that I liked and reading thru the pattern, came upon these directions which I cannot figure out:
•Fabric D: Cut sixty-four 33/8” squares. •Fabric E: Cut ninety-six 33/8” squares. •Fabric F: Cut thirty-two 33/8” squares. •Fabric G: Cut sixty-four 2˝” x 3” strips. •Backing: Piece into one 66” square. What are 33/8" squares? I don't think it's a typo as it is repeated thruout the pattern directions. Here is a link to the pattern: http://www.favecrafts.com/Quilting/B...rings-Creative Thanks in advance for any help you all can give me! |
Aahhh. I see why it reads wrong. Where they've used 1/2" & 1/4" the computer makes the fraction smallers that the whole numbers. They forgot that it doesn't do that for 1/8" Try 3 3/8", but do it with cheap paper, sew it and all! Much easier to check and no fabric lost. I had patterns with "8ths" used before. No biggy.

I think you have this deciphered! The pattern directions should have been printed more clearly. I'm more of a 3 1/2" square person who trims after sewing diagonally down to the final size. Time consuming, but more accurate. I don't sew much, so what I do make needs to be goof proof!

it is saying 3 and 3/8 squares.. just looks funny...lol...

LOL, well my face is red ! Isn't that the most obvious thing to think of first? But not once did it enter my mind. That is the way the fibro fog hits you sometimes... now you can see why I do a lot of froggin'. LOL Not as much now that I've learned not to sew when I'm like this.. now I know not to cut either!!! Well, I already knew that too, I have some interesting scraps from those lessons. :D

What does the pattern look like? It might be 33 eight inch squares.
