Can anyone give me an idea please ?

Our quilt group is ten years old next year and a challenge has been set to celebrate this. The group has the word "GREEN" in their name and the challenge is to incorporate that colour with an idea. The size is 10" x 30" ( so three ten inch blocks ) in whatever style you want. I am not an art quilt girl and I did think of a pieced tree design of some sort. I am really finding it difficult to come up with anything so thought I would ask you all. Thank you so much for any ideas you may have.

DOTTYMO 02-24-2016 03:22 AM

A tree with branches and a leaf with the name of every member past and present.

just_the_scraps_m'am 02-24-2016 04:55 AM

i would get on the google home page & type in "trees" or "art trees" or more specific words & see what there is to inspire you! photos are where a lot of art comes from...

I would look for your strengths in quilting and find a quilt pattern that will work. My strength is bargello so I would make one in shades of green batiks. You could make it look like the rolling hills that I see in Downton Abbey.

cjsews 02-24-2016 05:26 AM

You could do 3 different flowers

Mitch's mom 02-24-2016 05:38 AM

White background with a large dollar sign $ done in green squares and 1/2 square triangles.

HillCountryGal 02-24-2016 05:45 AM

This is one of those things we can over-think if we aren't careful.
I'd say, make it easy and fun for yourself.
How about something simple like a log cabin block or courthouse square.. starting with a very light shade of green, then graduate to darker greens.
Just a thought.
Have fun with it, whatever you choose.

A pieced tree would look nice. I had to chuckle to myself when I read DottyMO's idea. Thinking about getting all 2,500 or so names we'd have by listing all our past & present members from the last 10 years onto a 10x30" quilt would be a challenge in itself. But if you have a smaller guild that might work. :)

As HillCountryGal wrote, there are many options for a green quilt if it doesn't have to be appliqued -- or even if it does. There are many scenes you could create using only variations of green. Think Picasso's Blue or Pink Period, and then just make sure to have plenty of contrast in saturation to add interest; and it might also be good to add visual texture with various sized prints and some solids. It doesn't have be a recognizable object -- just start sewing and see what emerges. You might be surprised!

Oohhh! One more thought -- what if you got a solid wholecloth & did quilting in different shades of green thread?

I love this 2 colored block called "Tavern Puzzle". You could make it with a dark green and a light green combination. This is a 12 1/2" block, but could easily be trimmed to the size you need.

There is a pieced bare tree pattern that I might use. I would piece one block bare, the next with raw edge appliquéd bright tree leaf buds, the next in full leaf and the last in fall leaf colours.

Onebyone 02-24-2016 09:41 AM

I would think there would be a lot of trees made. Lot of fun images come to mind to applique using the theme of Green. Green as green with envy, Green as green thumb, Green as in greenhorn, Green as in green eating (cows eating grass), Green as in moon made of green cheese.

Chester the bunny 02-24-2016 12:53 PM

You could do blocks (whatever you decide on) in different types of fabrics, if you have access to older clothing would be even better. The green theme would be reduce reuse recycle.
A theme, rather than a color, although if all the fabrics were green, well then you've gone above and beyond :o)

paoberle 02-24-2016 01:59 PM

A tree. A shamrock. A cloverleaf. Leaves. A vine with leaves and flowers. Embroider members names on the leaves and/or petals.

DogHouseMom 02-24-2016 03:02 PM

Hmmm .... Kermit the frog sings "It's not easy being Green" ... how about some frog and Lily pad appliqué?

feline fanatic 02-24-2016 03:27 PM

A couple of years ago a hand dye fabric company put out a challenge to make a small quilt with an acid green hand dye. The theme of the challenge was the Broadway show "Wicked". I was so fortunate that I got to see the display of 90% of the challenge quilts at the Syracuse AQS show. the remaining 10% were travelling with the off Broadway production of the show, picked by cast and crew members. Here is a google link to images of the challenge. I bet you will get loads of ideas from this:

I did a Shakespeare In The Park quilt all in green.

How much work do you want to put into this project? How much will you use the finished project? Make something that pleases you and don't use precious time that might not be of value/use to you in the future. Could just use the color in a favorite design. Sometimes challenge pieces only fill the bill for the project, not our own desires!

There are a number of patterns using trees. Could maybe incorporate the tree idea into something for Christmas? My first thought though was something to celebrate St Patrick's Day, coming right around.

EmiliasNana 02-25-2016 06:55 AM

Great size for a table runner or wall hanging. Lots of great ideas presented too. Good luck. I did a challenge with my guild and it was actually a great experience to think outside the box (and my comfort zone) for a project that I didn't have to invest a lot of time or money into.

pandamommy 02-25-2016 08:02 AM

What about a birthday cake in the middle with green icing and candles and balloon on both sides or a big applique "10" on one side. Whatever you do be sure and share pictures with us. If you just used the cake and balloons then you could use it as a runner or banner for family birthdays. Ideas are popping in my head. You could do "Happy Birthday" in the center with balloons and or cake/cupcakes on the sides.

madamekelly 02-25-2016 09:12 AM

Of course, my first thought was something using the "green eggs and ham" from Dr. Seuss. It might make a cute table runner for someone with small kids, along with a copy of the book...

Some great ideas here! I have nothing!

DottyD 02-25-2016 09:55 AM

Thank you all so much for some wonderful ideas and I haven't made my mind up yet - but lots to think about. You are all so great - thank you all

kat13 02-25-2016 09:59 AM

How about a shamrock?

carol45 02-25-2016 03:41 PM

How about a 10 green layer cake with a candle at the top.

RedGarnet222 02-25-2016 06:41 PM

One of the most beautiful quilts I ever saw was a green and white double irish chain done with two greens and a white with pink roses in the center of each crossing. Very easy and stunning.

QuiltnLady1 02-25-2016 09:52 PM

A Shamrock, a clover -- they are not as complicated as a tree. But if you want to do a tree, search for tree coloring pages and you come up with a page like this: http://www.coloring.ws/trees.htm . You can print out the tree you like and work out a pattern from there. I can't draw so I rely on the coloring pages a lot.

The words from your challenge that stand out to me are: "Ten" years old," Celebration", and "Green" using 3 ten inch blocks. What about a birthday theme.... a cake fused to one block with 10 candles to represent the 10 year mark of the guild. The candles could be green. Another block could be your favorite quilt block to represent you as part of the guild.(using green fabrics) and the final block can be a lucky 4 leaf clover or shamrock to represent how lucky you feel to be a part of the guild. Or one block can be used for members to autograph (in a green pen of course.):)) Have fun with the challenge and let us know what you decide.

Many great ideas here. I'd recommend going off the beaten path a little. If you're comfortable with applique, maybe do something Hawaiian. If you like paper piecing, choose one of the patterns out there, possible a geometric.

quiltedsunshine 02-26-2016 09:09 PM

When I think of a "Challenge Quilt," the finished project and interpretation is up to the participant. They can use applique, piecing, embroidery, embellishments or whatever they want.

Here are a couple challenges that I've participated in...

We were given a bag with 2 coordinating fabrics and challenged to use the two fabrics, and at least 24 4-patches.

Everyone got a magazine (wide variety), and someone drew out a page number. And we had to make a quilt representing that page in the book. Some pages just had words, while others had pictures.

We were given a choice of fine art masterpieces, and challenged to make a quilt that represented that art piece.

You could just have the participants create a green quilt. Do you remember making color poetry in school? Have them show what green means to them. example:

"Yellow's the color of a new baby chick.
A spark that flies as the switch goes click.
The big, bright sun And the feeling inside.
The ripening of grain on the country side."

All this mention of green & white cakes has me thinking of the Squires Kitchen challenge to create Green & White Sugar Flowers. I think the sugar leaf handbag with the succulents is especially striking. If you're interested in some inspiration, here's the link (sugar flowers start at 8:45): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXnWGfE1jlU
