Can anyone help please?
I find myself with a bunch of 6 1/2" squares. I would rather not cut them down and waste the fabric. Can anyone suggest patterns using 6 1/2" squares. I googled it and didn't get much help.
Thanks for your suggestions. |
Picture please! You could ue them in center of warm wishes, use them in center with sashing around them, alternating block with disapperaing 4/98 patch, use them as center fo MQC "exploding block. show us your decision! Have fun!!!!!

You could do either disappearing four patch or disappearing nine patch. They can be done with any size squares.

Eye spy quilts can be made without cutting your squares down. Also, you can put 2 together, right sides facing, draw a diagonal line, stitch on each side of the line, cut them apart on the drawn line and make pinwheels, or, there are Tons of layouts for using half square triangles. Snowball blocks are another option.... There are so many... Any ' charm square/Nickle quilt ' pattern can be used... You would just be using 6" instead of 5" squares.

I'd make one of the HST quilt designs! This board on pinterest has a pretty decent set of options!

Go with any charm square pattern, they will just be a little larger.

My first thoughts were the disappearing 9 patch and 4 patch patterns. Any pattern that uses squares/charms can be used, just adjust the number of blocks you make for the size difference. I recently made a baby blanket and used 5" squares which just alternated a full square with a cut 1/2 square across the row and it came out cute. Lots of options for you.
|
You could also do Falling Charms. Just because the pattern calls for charm squares. I have done the pattern using 6.5" squares.
|
I have made the Falling Charms in both fall and Christmas fabric. They were beautiful! USE them!!

My first thought was pinwheels

http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...t-t221305.html This is an easy block that goes together fast. Here's a link for the De Novo pattern http://www.benartex.com/page/tempo-351.htm . I modified the measurements to 6.5 squares and 2.5 width rectangles. I cut mine from fat quarters and yardage but you could use jelly rolls for the rectangles and honey buns for the sashing.

There are many patterns, you can make 9 patches and put them in sashings singly or make groups and sash, looks nice or just cut plain colors and make a patch quilt. Your iminagination is your only limit.

Google Peg Sradin. She did a great method on Youtube about Fold and stitch. Interesting.

I've used 6 1/2" squares many times. For a simple design, alternate them with 4-patches or pinwheels. This is a crib quilt I made for my niece. The focus fabric was 1 yard cut for the 6 1/2" squares and the outer border.

You could use them on a puff/Biscuit quilt by using them as the top square, and making the bottom square 5.5 inches. I will post a picture of the one I made, but recently I saw one that had buttons sewed to the center of each puff. Next one so going to have buttons too! This puff quilt was a request by DH for a really warm quilt. It hangs down to the dust ruffle on my Queen bed, is backed with a heavy flannel sheet, and weighs 7lbs! Never tell me you are cold, I will fix it! Good luck with whatever pattern you chose.

Thanks to all who responded. Now I have so many options, I just need to decide which one to start with. You quilters are the best!
|
You can do the 3D pinwheel, without cutting. I made mine with 5 1/2 so 61/2 would be great. I got the tutorial on here a few yrs ago and its so easy.

I used a bunch I had to do the exploding block and was super happy with the results. Additionally, I agree with the other member who suggested charm square patterns.
|
You could make snowball blocks with them.
|
Make a chevron quilt using them for HSTs.
|
Any charm square pattern will work, your quilt will just come out bigger. I agree with making Falling Charms, nice pattern ...
|
I have used them to make half square triangles that were light and dark. Loved the larger squares. I made a large throw the is my go to quilt for snuggling.
|
Well I guess it all depends on what you want to use the quilt for. You could use thin sashing in between each block and then use one of those permanent pens and write your favorite quotes, sayings, bible verses. Or if you are a reader like me write the title of the books you have read. Then it could become your curl up and read quilt. Sorry if it sounds crazy. I'm just simple like that.

My first thought was a snowball block. Find a good fabric that will contrast with your fabrics. Cut that contrasting fabric in squares. You decide the size. Place them in each corner and sew them on an angle. Like half a flying goose. When you sew the blocks together your pretty fabric will be intact but you will have cute little squares through out the quilt.
