A friend of ours was cleaning our his attic and found these in a tote and was wondering if I could find out how old they were or close? The second picture is the backing on the first quilt. It is tied and the others have white backing and are hand quilted and the binding is hand stitched on. Any help would be appreciated?

What a find !!! They are in such good condition by the looks of it... strange place for beautiful quilts to be stored.

nativetexan 09-12-2014 11:26 AM

Oh someone forgot their quilts! so sad but they are so nice. what a find!! i'm going for maybe the 60's.

Billi 09-12-2014 12:23 PM

Like nativetexan it screams 1960 maybe early 70's to me especially the tied one and the bow ties which look to have some fabric from men's shirts.

The are really great quilts and look to be in great condition way a treasure your friend found...because of things like this I now always label my quilt with at least my name and the date. Even my picnic and ugly quilts I'm hoping they will out live me.

QUILTNMO 09-12-2014 12:37 PM

i woud say maybe late 60s or early 70 great quilts!!!

NikkiLu 09-12-2014 01:33 PM

Yes, the colors are too bright to be very old. HTH

I agree with everyone with the possible exception of the squares on point with the pink alternating. It may be 30s. A closer look at some of the indigo and black/white fabric look like they could possibly be older and then set with the pink which could be 30's or newer.

What a great find though, would be happy to have any of them.

I believe that bubblegum pink was popular in the 1930's.

What a great find! And to have them be in such good condition.

I stitched with some of those very fabrics in the 1960s and 1970s. In those days we made darling pinafores and aprons for the little girl children, and rompers for the little men.

great quilts! i especially like the bow tie quilt. to me, the 60's does not seem 'old' LOL

sewred 09-12-2014 04:08 PM

Thanks everyone well guess what? I now own these! He sold them to my husband before I even new the answer to how old they are! I love them they are so pretty and I am so proud to own them now! YAY!

Jackie Spencer 09-12-2014 04:20 PM

Wow! They look to be in excellent condition, besides being beautiful!

ManiacQuilter2 09-13-2014 07:01 AM

I also would guess the 60s or the 70s too. I just might have some of those plaids in my stash !!

luvstoquilt 09-13-2014 07:36 AM

I agree the pink one is likely from the "30's....The first one is interesting, too. I remember some of that fabric in the 40's for sure..my grandmother had a love of plaid and purple! The last one is more like 60's and 70's and the "Bow Tie" could be anything from the 30' on up. I would look at the back of the first one..it looks like it might be feedsack material..if it is it would have some needle holes and that would help date it in the 30's

Yes, I agree. We have one that my grandparents made in the late 1920's with that pink as the center appliqué on a beige background. The only other one I'd venture a guess on is the last one. The green/blue/orange fabric could be late 60's early 70's. The rest look like they used fabrics from clothing as someone else mentioned. My great-grandmother and grandmother rarely bought 'new' fabric to make a quilt.

quilter2theend 09-14-2014 05:47 AM

What a great find, I think the first quilt could be 30's or 30's. The others 60's or 70's. I hope you keep them or pass them to other quilt lovers who will treasure them.

rndelling 09-14-2014 06:45 AM

My mom made most of my clothes in the 1950's and I had a dress made out of the backing fabric on the first quilt. Not sure if they're all from that era but that one definitely is from the 1950's.

isewman 09-14-2014 08:05 AM

just looking at those pictures. I would think maybe 50's-60's. I myself dont feel like the 70's. I dont know if a quilt appraiser could give you a better ideal. Let me know, what you find out. I'm a little curious myself. Don

crafty pat 09-14-2014 09:43 AM

The first few look like fabrics from the 50's the last one looks like the early 60's.

BettyGee 09-14-2014 10:09 AM

I'd say sixties or a little earlier.

ptquilts 09-14-2014 11:51 AM

I think the tilted nine patch with the pink could be earlier than the 30's, looks to me like turn of the century. A close-up of the fabrics would help more.

I believe the bow tie could be older as well. Hard to tell with solids and plaids.

Great find!! congrats.

Rose S. 09-14-2014 12:01 PM

I was thinking 70's....specially on that first one. I would love to examine these in person.

maryellen2u 09-14-2014 01:01 PM

I have no idea how old they are but I love them especially the bow tie. What a wonderful treasure!

mirish2 09-14-2014 03:37 PM

The squares with men's shirting are probably late 50's or early 60's. The bright criss-cross is 60's fabric. I used the same stuff at that time

After the Depression was over some people didn't like quilts, because it meant you were too poor to buy yourself a blanket.
