Can anyone tell me how to tell the new posts from the posts I've already read?

On the old board once you read a thread it would turn a different color then if there were any new posts to that thread it said new posts instead of new topic. I knew which ones I read and could read the new ones and not try to remember which ones I read. Now all I see are red and blue envelopes - red for hot topics and blue for the less popular. Many times I read something and, I don't mean to sound mean here but, I don't care to make a comment on somebody's thread. I still like to know that is one I already read without trying to memorize all of them or reread them over and over. So as first stated does anyone know how to identify the ones I've read?

PS Sorry I'm really not trying to whine here. Wish they would have red envelopes for new, unread threads and blue for ones we've have read or something just as visible.

sewwhat85 11-01-2011 07:27 PM

i wish i knew what to tell you but i have also been trying to figure that out

dkabasketlady 11-01-2011 07:30 PM

I keep reading the same threads over & over!!!

coachmatthewsvhs 11-01-2011 07:34 PM

I have noticed that if you make a comment.... a little green arrow appears in the bottom right corner of the envelope for that thread. I'm not a person that likes change..... BUT I WILL FIGURE THIS OUT. It will just take an adjustment period!!! LOL

SuziC 11-01-2011 07:34 PM

Where are the post and pics i have already done? There is no "my posts" section on here!!

LLWinston44 11-01-2011 07:37 PM

I'm wondering too. I just hate change. I don't know why we had to change. I think most of us were comfortable with the old one... :::sigh:::

Me Too! I did see a key to the envelopes at one time, I think it was under my profile. I think they were pictured too small to really see what each of them ment.

DogHouseMom 11-01-2011 07:42 PM

I'm with you guys. I can't remember which posts I've opened and which I haven't. The old board not only changed the type face for you, but when you exited the post back to "recent topics" it took you back to the place you left off (ie 30 posts down the list) - the new board takes you back to the top - which makes the visibility of which posts I've already opened all that more important!!!

so far ... not happy. for this and a lot of other reasons.

I have also noticed that the board looks and behaves much differently in different browsers. BAD BAD BAD!!! Design flaw (IMO) ... designers should make sure that their sites look and behave the same way in all the key browsers.

QuiltnNan 11-01-2011 07:46 PM

i apologize to the person who posted a 'fix' for this... i lost where i read it :)
if you go to Home and pick a section that you are interested in, scroll to the bottom, you can click on Archive there. as you read them from there, they change color so you can tell that you've read them.

of course i found it after posting that i lost it :)

hmmmm... and when you post a link to a previous thread, it simply shows the thread's title
thanks mzzzquilts

Me three! Plus your avatars got tiny and your signatures disappeared and it just makes it seem so much more impersonal. I know that is just a weird thing to say--but just how I feel. I found this board in the middle of the night early this year when I was in so much pain that I wanted to scream (or worse) and this became a lifeline for me for a long time. Over the months I have come to think of you all as friends and my poor, pitiful psyche is not handling this change very well. I'll survive, but this ain't fun!

mltquilt 11-02-2011 02:57 AM

We are less than a day into the new board. As with all things new this to will take some time to adjust to.

Not liking this so far, so not user friendly. Hopefully some adjustments will be made to make this easier to get around in.

Also, trying to figure that one.

SueDor 11-02-2011 03:32 AM

I want to know also!

jeanneb52 11-02-2011 03:35 AM

We WILL figure it all out. It just takes time and faith. I have more faith than time and the old board was easier because we were used to it. I think this will be okay in time....

ladybug45 11-02-2011 04:39 AM

I would like the answer to this also. When I go back there is no way to tell if I've read it until I get into it. Seems I am reading the same ones over and over

mcpatches 11-02-2011 04:54 AM

At the bottom of the page (not this one, the page that lists all the threads), there is a key as to the envelope colors. Don't know if this key will help or not since additional, unread comments could be added after you first look at it and change the envelope color back to blue.

ranger 11-02-2011 05:00 AM

Here's what I did.

I went to MAIN and at the bottom there is a THREAD DISPLAY OPTIONS. I chose to show posts for the last 2 days in descending order. I clicked SHOW THREADS ( look to your right of thread display options). This brings up all threads for the past 2 days.

I go through the threads and read the ones that interest me. Once I read a thread, the color changed so that I now know which threads I have read.

Edited to say....I can do this for any of the categories, not just MAIN.

Maureen 11-02-2011 06:22 AM

go to archive on the bottom then hit main. After you read them, they turn pink so you know which ones you read.

DogHouseMom 11-02-2011 09:16 AM

I know, a few of us that were in chat last night did tests. There is a visible diffence to the the title of the thread IF you are reading posts from a specific forum (ie Main, General Chit Chat, etc) AND IF you hit "refresh" after exiting the thread.

There is no visible change to threads when they are read from the "whats new" section. I *think* a lot of us use this as it's a "one stop shopping" place so to speak.

I really would like that feature back.

I'm still trying to figure my way around. However, I saw that after I read this thread without commenting on it and went back to Main, the envelope had turned gray and did not have any letters sticking out of it. Also, the title of the thread turned a lighter color, showing I had read this thread but not the darker titles around it. Is this not happening for you?

Also, have noticed that when there is a new post to a thread I have read, aside from the letters sticking up out of the envelopes, there is a small blue circle next to the envelope that will skip all the posts I have read in the thread and take me directly to the first new post in it.

I just wish the envelope colors were brighter. Am having a hard time noticing the difference between blue and gray, for example.

Me TOO!!!!!

RenaB 11-02-2011 10:30 AM

This is what I have noticed:

When you are looking at the thread titles, to the left there is an evelope. If it is bluish with papers coming out, there are unread posts. If it is gray with the envelope sealed, then there are no unread posts (you have already read them), if you see a green arrow, it means you replied to the thread (already posted).

Hope this helps!

Willa 11-02-2011 11:58 AM

I did use the archive at the bottom of the page and that did help but it doesn't give you any of the benefits from the "normal" pages. Some of the new features are nice and I'm not trying to use this as a gripe session because I do appreciate being able to come here for free and communicating with others about my craft. It would just be nice to have it so you could know with something noticeable. I did look at and understood the envelopes with the papers coming out and with the envelope closed but as soon as someone posts the envelope gets papers again and I'm back to opening it again. lol We will get used to this new style but just wish there was a way to tell a new thread from added topics. I really could care less if a topic is "hot" or not but hate to keep rereading the same thing. Hopefully this issue is being addressed and once the newness is wore off and the bugs are worked out we can feel comfortable again.

Dolphyngyrl 11-02-2011 03:23 PM

go to the bottom of the page under archive and it will pull up all the threads and you can see which ones you have read, just found that out makes it easier to read from there than the forum

Did anyone ASK if we wanted a change? or WHAT should be changed? I bet this did cost lots of money - sort of like the government.....

kat13 11-02-2011 07:24 PM

Man, this is going to take me awhile also to get used to it all, I keep having to refresh cuz for some reason each
page isn't downloading.....i don't like the new yahoo either.....but I am not going to be defeated!! I would be lost
without this board!

The point is --why should we waste our time trying to figure it out? Most of us are busy making quilts and sewing things; and came here to have fun and relax a bit. This is making it feel more like going to your job and putting up with crap.

jmabby 11-02-2011 10:10 PM

Let's hope it gets better.

annesthreads 11-03-2011 12:25 AM

I've just noticed that if I go to the final page of the thread and then come out of it, next time I go to the main list, the thread title is no longer in bold. I don't think this happened if I just looked at the first page of the thread.

I think the new design is going to be OK - a learning curve from time to time doesn't do my ageing brain any harm!

My point exactly!! I have better things to do (like quilt) than research the "workings" of a so-called New Forum when the old forum performed perfectly well. I fear a lot of us will just "stay home and quilt" and lose our friendships.

I am not a happy camper. But I really doubt that those in charge care at all if we are unhappy.
