Can this be done?
 

This is to do with the craze of making fabric boxes. I have a friend (she loved the small ones I made), who is interested in giving two of these fabric boxes to friends of hers who are retiring in April. The problem is, she wants them about 14 x14" square and about 10 to 12" high. The object is to fill them with special goodies. Do you think I can do this using a stiffener? She wants them to be done in Alabama Football and hounds tooth fabric. I would love to have your thoughts on this. Do you think stiffener is enough or should I use the plastic canvas? Any thoughts or suggestions will be apprediated.

I have used peltex and timtex in large tote bags and they stand up well. Stiffy is a similar MUCH less expensive product by Long Creek Mills I buy it by the roll:

There are some really good stiffeners out there. I don't think you'd have to use plastic.

Quite a few years ago i made fabric bowls and vases (some 18" tall) - using the stiff interfacing and zig zag stitch method...much different than the boxes i've been seeing here lately. It would definitely work for a fabric box the size you are describing....but i would not recommend putting anything too heavy into it and carrying it around. You should be able to google or check amazon - there are books with patterns and how to. Good luck.

I'd second the timtex suggestion. It is what fabric bowls use, so should work for a box.

I would suggest Timtex or Stiffy. What about the possibility of using a premade cardboard box and covering it with batting and the fabrics she chose.

That might work. I guess I will just have to play with it for a while. I feel it can be done, just figuring our how LOL I appreciate any suggestions and idea. Thanks

I just discovered Soft and Stable at my LQS. It's wonderful. Will stand up by itself.

Remember too that the items filling the box will help it stand up. And part of the beauty of fabric boxes is that they are soft and not too stiff.

I'm using a very stiff interfacing on another project (really, I am...just haven't been working on it lately!) and it would probably do the trick for you. Sorry don't have details. Just went into JoAnn's and fondled till I found the stiffest interfacing I could find.
