I am making a quilt, the top will be made with LQS good fabric, then on the back, instead of traditional batting and backing fabric.....can I use flannel or fleece? It is hot here in Florida, and I want the person I am making the quilt for..to use it.
I know I have to pre-wash my fabric either way I go. I am just wondering what will happen if I put flannel or fleece on the back, what will happen if when I give it away and the person I gave it to washes it. I plan on having it quilted...if not FMQing it myself. Thanks for replys... Bejay |
Just per-wash whatever You use. There are no RULES. Try what you think will work best.

yes, you can combine fabrics. and fleece or flannel will work fine for the back. Since flannel shrinks a lot, wash it a couple of times before you stitch it all together. Fleece won't shrink, but washing will help get out extra "fuzzies". I happen to think that flannel and fleece are both warmer than regular fabric...have you thought about using a muslin instead of batting with regular fabrics for the front and back - that might be cooler than the flannel or fleece.

AHHHHH.....muslin!!!! Great thought!!!! |
If you decide to go with fleece and are planning to have it LA, I would check with them first. Some LA's don't like to work with it as it is stretchy :D:D:D

Good point! Thank you!

I made a tied fleece quilt using a pieced quilt top and fleece backing. I left the borders unfinished and clipped the borders with the fleece into strips to tie. I didn't have time to baste and quilt the top. It's one of my favorite quilts when I can keep it home. It always finds a place in one of my kid's cars when they leave.

I would consider just using a queen or king size quilt for the backing, sans batting. Just a thought.

I've used flannel for backing and it makes a warm quilt. I live in NJ and it's nice for the winter. Not hot, though.

If you use fleece or flannel, it will be a warm quilt.
I know some LAQ have tension problems with fleece, I love it. It quilts so nice as long as you don't tighten it. |
I have quilts both with fleece and flannel backings and I can tell you that they are WARM!!!! If you want it to be lightweight and cooler, use the prewashed flannel as batting and use a cotton backing. It will make a world of difference. The quilt will be much cooler and far more comfortable to use.
