I don't LA (yet) but check out this (English) lady's work she did her Phoenix entirely on the LA and I don't think there's any fusible in there either - she laid the fabric pieces down and FMQd right over them. http://www.ferfab.co.uk/portfolio/sh...nix_rising.jpg

Beautiful bear! Her kits always turn out so well. I just finished the "The Picnic". It was fast & fun!

I quilted a raw edge bird on the lonmg arm as a beginner. I was very careful on the edges of the feathers, especially since they were not fused correctly and had popped up.
It took a long time to complete for such a small quilt, but it secured the edges and quilted the piece at the same time. I was able to do some thread painting to show off the fused work and also background quilting.
The quilt won 2nd place in the local show!!!

i've quilted lots of raw-edge applique quilts on the long-arm---why would it be questionable?
or are you confusing quilting with stitching your appliques down?
2 different things- raw edge applique simply means the edges are not turned under- usually *but not always* fused to hold in place- then secured with stitching- either a blanket stitch, zig-zag-satin stitch or even a straight stitch. quilting holds your 3 layers together- enhances and finishes the quilt design.
some people do thread painting with their long-arms.
you can do it any way you want that gives you the results you are looking for

I love the bear. I was wondering if I could do the same thing when I get my longarm. Right now, I am glueing all my pieces down.

I don't know anything about how to longarm quilt but the bear and the wolf that I saw were sooooo beautiful!! You ladies did a WONDERFUL job on those!!

I have quilted raw edge applique on the LA with monofilament thread through all layers. You may need a smaller needle than the 18 I normally use. The wash away stabilizer is a good idea if you are sure your fabrics won't bleed. Alternatively, you could use Press and Seal.
