I made my first quilts on a treadle machine at my grandma's. When having a choice, I do prefer my Viking. :) I do remember grandma's machine would sew about anything. We did have some fun days and many laughs. have fun with yours. :)

using both feet in the center--will depend on the size of your feet! large feet can do this.

Absolutely! You can do anything with a bit of practice and patience

I taught myself how to sew 4 years ago on a 1911 Singer 27 that I had no idea as to how they were supposed to work. I am a guy so that really threw me a curve but you know what it wasnt hard at all. I learned on a treadle and I still use them exclusively. Just remember the handwheel is what you start and stop the machine by.

Thanks I will practice the stopping part today... never thought of stopping with the wheel.

Yep you live and die by the handwheel on a treadle, thats how they pretty much got their name.

Of course you can. Just practise without a needle until you get a rhythm. You ladies are making me want to sew an a treadle again. Hey good luck with this at let us know how you getting along.
