Can I use 100% cotton flannel for the sashing in my 100% cotton quilt
I have some left over cotton flannel that is the perfect color for the sashing in my quilt. I am using a cotton flannel blanket for the backing.
will the two fabrics look and wash ok? Thanks for your help? |
Cotton flannel & quilting cotton often shrink at different rates. I would launder the flannel first, but other than that there's no reason why you can't.

I agree with PaperPrincess. Always launder flannel because it sometimes shrinks a lot, shrinks unevenly, or bleeds. I've mixed flannel and quilting cotton in quilts before.
Ditto what PaperPrincess and dunster wrote!

My only thought is that the different weight of the flannel will make matching all your seams between the blocks and the sashing harder.

To answer your question - it will wash and look just fine - but, IMHO, only if you pre shrink your flannel. I would also pre shrink your blanket as well as they may shrink at different rates.
I always pre shrink flannel. I have had even expensive flannel purchased at the LQS shrink. One piece started off at 42"wof and ended up 39" wof. |
I prewash/shrink all fabric.
If you can I would use 1/2 inch seams because sometimes in wear the flannel will pull out of the seam. I would wash the flannel also.
I agree to washing and drying the flannel but I usually wash and dry mine 3 times.
I use cotton and flannel a lot. However, I always wash and dry my fabrics prior to assembly.
I have used flannel with regular cotton with n problem...prewash the flannel, though, if you haven't already!
I've always been told not to mix quilting cotton & flannel but if you ladies have had good luck with them then it must be ok.......prewashing the flannel 2 or 3 times before use sounds good......always use 1/2'' seams when sewing flannel.......
If you can, try to convince the recipient to use cold water & low heat to launder their quilt and then wash/dry once through on those settings. If you think they'll do otherwise, I agree with Vat. Wash & dry the flannel in warm water/medium heat 3x to hopefully get all the shrinking out before you start piecing & quilting it. (of course, you know how I know this)
I've done it with no problem, I do prewash and I actually cut a smidge wider since flannel does not fold as flat.
Ditto; shrink at lease 3 times.

I just recently made my first quilt mixing cotton & flannel. It was a baby quilt & turned out so cute. I used the flannel as backing & alternating blocks on the front. I pre-washed it all before I started cutting.

I just now got back to this post and you guys have been so helpful! Since I am a beginner quilter, I think I will stick with 100% cotton on the sashing. I will also wash the flannel blanket before using it for my backing.
Thanks for the tip on 1/2 inch seams for flannel quilts. I plan on my next quilt to be flannel for my grandson and will be sure to use the 1/2 inch seams. You guys are the best! |
