Can I use 2000 yard spools on my sewing machine?

I have been looking at some of the larger spools or cones of thread, they are cheaper but I don't know if I can use them on my sewing machine. I bet someone here on the board knows!! I have a Janome 6600 can I use the King Tut 2000 yard spools on this machine? Or would it be too big?

imsewnso 10-20-2014 04:44 PM

If the spool is too large for your machine you can use a thread stand behind your machine. There are many thread stands available. Some thread needs to come off the spool horizontally, while other thread feeds better if it comes off the spool standing vertical. I use large spools of thread, and some are wound differently prompting me to purchase a thread stand with both horizontal and vertical pin. You can see them here:

Of course there are other stands there....this is just the one I prefer.

You can use almost any thread in any machine. Sometimes you need an individual free standing thread cone holder, similar to this one made by someone.

or check out these on EBay
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=cone+thread+stand

I like the idea of the home made holder using a cd spindle. I wonder what else would work. I have one like the EBay items. For it to work, I have to get the thread up so, I raise the carry handle on my machine and let it act as part of the unit. The thread goes off the cone, up through the eye, then over the handle, then into the machine and out the needle.

I'm using cones from Superior Threads using their holder with my 6600.

I use large spools all the time. Have a free-standing thread stand - cheapie from JoAnns. I know others stick them in a coffee mug or cut off soda bottle, etc. to keep them tame. And I have less issues with those threading through my machine (10 yr old Viking) sometimes than I do standard spools.

LyndaOH 10-20-2014 07:08 PM

Your Janome 6600 comes with 2 thread holders and a telescoping antennae which are perfect for cones. I used King Tut cones on mine all the time but for piecing preferred So Fine or Masterpiece cones.

Kassaundra 10-20-2014 07:20 PM

I just wind the thread from the big spool to the bobbin and use the bobbin on the normal thread holder spot.

But I don't have your machine.

Suzanne57 10-20-2014 09:32 PM

I made one of those thread holders using a CD spindle. Works great.

Up4BigChal 10-21-2014 03:16 AM

go to Connecting Threads they have a Wonderful Thread Holder for any size spool I Love my Birthday present from my mom I use it All the time.

Jeanne S 10-21-2014 05:43 AM

I just put my large cones in a heavy glass, set it to the right behind my machine and pull the thread straight up through the telescoping antennae then over to the machine threading parts. Works great.

Sewnoma 10-21-2014 05:44 AM

Yup, you sure can. I have the 6600 and I use big cones all the time.

I put the largest spool caps on the base of the spool pins like platforms, so they don't wobble as much. I know you can get thicker pins for large cones but I never have bothered. The cone tends to rock a little bit sometimes but it doesn't seem to harm anything - stitches still come out beautifully and I don't get any breakage, etc.

If that doesn't seem to work for you and you don't have a cone holder, drop the cone into a can behind your machine and thread it normally. That metal arm that the thread goes through first is essentially the same as the top of a cone holder so you should be able to get away with that.

romanojg 10-21-2014 05:55 AM

You can place a coffee cup behind your machine to use as a cone holder, works great

meyert 10-21-2014 07:49 AM

Thanks for your replies!! I knew you guys would know!

I also own a Janome 6600. I set my cones from Connecting Threads in a little tin bucket that I picked up at The Dollar Spot at Target. Simple solution and more portable when I want to travel with my machine.

Jingle 10-22-2014 03:23 AM

You should be able to use a container behind your machine to hold the spool. Thread machine as usual.

BCaplette 10-22-2014 03:30 AM

I have a Singer and I use a travel coffee mug as an upright thread holder for the large spools or cones. It works beautifully. I put thread through the little air hole in top of lid and set it behind my machine. Then thread the machine as usual.

Annaquilts 10-22-2014 03:31 AM

Hubby made me a thread stand and I also use a very heavy large beer glass.

Tippysmom 10-22-2014 04:04 AM

I made one from an old wooden paper towel holder, most of my thread fits on it. At some point I will get my DH to sand the dowel down so all my spools will fit.

lclang 10-22-2014 04:12 AM

I use a wide mouth pint or quart jar, works fine for me.

maviskw 10-22-2014 04:28 AM

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-TH...item417fe09ed7 I don't understand this one. The thread needs to come off the spool from the top, even is it is lying on its side. If it doesn't come off the top, you will get extra pull, and extra tension, when the thread comes off the back side of the cone.

I have a cone holder like this http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=cone+thread+stand and also use a recipe card holder my nephew made for me. The cone sits at a slant and the thread comes off the top of the cone and up to the first thread guide on the machine.

MaggieLou 10-22-2014 05:50 AM

I made a thread holder from a wood paper towel holder. My DH just added an eye screw to the top to run the thread through. Total cost $1.50 at Goodwill.

Krystyna 10-22-2014 06:06 AM

Yes, use a thread stand. I just picked up a new one at Joann using a 50% off coupon! :)

junebug987 10-22-2014 07:45 AM

I have a janome 7700, started with the 6600. I bought the spool holder that screws into the back of my machine. I got it from brubakers online store. I love it and it holds the large spool beautifully and doesn't tip over.

purplefiend 10-22-2014 08:02 AM

I use a cone thread stand with the cones of thread. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Co...item56623e5ed1

Here's a functional piece of art, I have 2 of these.

Just make sure the thread you want to use is not for Serger or Overlock machines.

You can also use a large coffee cup behind the machine and a paper clip taped where needed so it feeds nicely over the machine where I need it to, then thread the machine as usual. (For those of us who want to spend every extra dime on fabric...lol!)

disijudy 10-22-2014 06:54 PM

Or you can go all out and get one of these :) http://www.nancysnotions.com/product...ortby=ourPicks

This is what I use and have never had a problem with it. I purposely buy large cones so I don't run out of thread of a certain color like one for piecing or SID http://www.ebay.com/itm/Large-Cone-S...item566aa53b70

Thanks for the idea of putting the spool cap at the base of my long platform for no wobbling not that I've ever had any trouble with this, but it might help in a way that I'm not aware of.

I use the 1st one you mentioned from Ebay, although I bought it elsewhere, I love it & never had a problem with it so far.

That one looks like more areas for thread to get wrapped around and cause problems IMHO

just joan 10-23-2014 03:26 AM

I use 2000yd spools on my machine all the time. In fact most of my thread is on these spools.

I've been eyeing that same one on Connecting threads website for a while. It's just so pretty! I have a 6600 so from reading this thread I wouldn't need a thread stand holder. The next time I need thread I am definitely going to look into a cone. Less costly!

samanthe75 10-23-2014 02:47 PM

I put the cone in a coffee cup behind the machine works for me

Scissor Queen 10-23-2014 05:28 PM

I use this, http://www.quiltersparadiseesc.com/O...ng/Notions.php The cones will stand up all by themselves.

I like the look of this one. Seems like it would work perfectly. For that machine! ! ! My Bernina has the vertical spool pin off to the right side, so there would be nothing to support the stem. The horizontal pin is behind the machine and might possibly work if the machine handle were propped up to a half-way-up position.
