can I use flannel as my backing fabric

if my front is 100% cotton? The front is all from a charm pack.

I just completed a lap quilt for my husband using flannel as backing (no batting). We live in Phoenix and don't need a quilt with heavy batting. He loves the quilt. I made it a little oversized so if he does need extra warmth, he simply folds the quilt in half. Otherwise, it's fine the way it is.

Cotton describes the fiber content. Flannel describes the weave and finish. It can be 100% cotton or a poly blend, or wool or other fibers.

And yes, cotton flannel can be used any where your other cotton fabrics are used.

Absolutely! Makes a wonderfully warm, yummy quilt.

I would wash the flannel first. It often shrinks a lot more than regular quilting cotton.

I have begun using flannel on all my quilts (except where I use a fleece). And I do wash the flannel at least 2 or 3 times and dry also in the hottest settings I can.

Yes and yes to all the suggestions above. My DS just commented on the flannel blanket which kept them warm during this -25° weather spree we are having.

I love backing with flannel, especially kid quilts. I makes them very soft and cuddly. As others have said, wash the flannel first as it shrinks more than regular cottons.

Tiggersmom 01-07-2014 10:58 AM

Absolutely! As previously said, I prewash all my flannels.
