i have a brother xl 3125 and went to brothers web site and they do not list one there, but Joann's fabrics say they have one that will fit it. How could i find out before buying.

I have a brother xl 2600 and use a universal foot from a fabric store. As long as the foot is for the type of shank your machine has, you should be fine.

ty i have looked on internet and have found one for 6.99 i am wandering if that one would work because of the prices are so different. I am new to quilting this on will be the first one i have made.

I bought a "universal walking foot" on the internet once, and it did NOT fit my machine. I don't know what brand it even was, but it was more like "this foot fits most". It was on ebay. I ended up emailing the guy, and he refunded 100% and I kept the foot (because he said to).

free motion foot is a darning foot really. has a spring on the shaft of the foot. one for your machine should be fine.

you can always go to a local sewing machine repair person to see if they have any they'd sell you. Sometimes they get feet with machines that are dropped off (instead of being thrown away). At the very least, the shop can tell you about the shank of your machine and if a generic foot you have will work on your machine.

There are only 4 or so shank lengths for sewing machines so, as long as you purchase a darning foot with the right shank for your machine, it should work. There are websites that show pictures of the different shanks and give you measurements so you can figure out what yours is (or your manual might tell you). Just Google to find one. Otherwise, take one of your Brother feet with you when you go shopping for a darning foot to make sure that the shanks are the same.

I have used universal feet on my machine and they worked just fine.

What you want for free motion quilting is a darning foot. I would expect that the Brother site lists a darning foot; you could look at that.

A generic darning foot will fit your machine, but it has to have the right shank. Here is a website that tells you how to determine the shank on your machine:

If you go to JoAnn's, you can bring one of your brother feet along with you to check the shank length of the new foot against the shank length of a foot you know works on your machine.
