can this pattern be made into a quilt?

I saw this design at a local home improvement store and thought what a wonderful design for a quilt. Any suggestions of how to go about it?? The design in the photo is made of tiles.

i think so, but i am no pattern drafting expert. i would probably begin by breaking it down into symmetrical parts, then trying to figure out how each element can be sewn into a round.
i am thinking of the diamonds that make a lone star you know? good luck! i am sure someone will be along shortly with far more help than i can offer :) aileen |
Yes it can with something to draw the circle - a yard stick with holes in it. A compass to get the angles. When it is accurate then cut and make templates for the individual pieces and then add seam allowances. You only need to do 1/4 of the design to have the pattern. Just takes come accuracy in drawing the angles.

It's a lone star in the middle and the outer border is a carpenters wheel. The center bits with the rectangles and squares will be the more difficult part - because they're not rectangles and squares!
You can work it up on graph paper with a protractor, or in EQ if you have it (there might even be a similar pattern in EQ7 ... not sure). The off-squares are very similar if not the same as the pieces that make up a Double Wedding Ring - so you could probably use that as a template and just re-size it to get the right math. I'd work up 1/8 of the pattern, make templates, then just make 8 sets of the templates. Or ... search the net ... it's quite possible it's been done already. I'd search for either lone star, carpenters star, or carpenters square. |

Wouldn't she only need to make 1/8 of the pattern though? |
1/8th of the pattern would work if you remember to reverse. I'm lousy at that mirror image stuff so I would draft 1/4 of the pattern. I believe one of the paper piecers (Karen Stone, Judy Niemeyer, Paula? Nadelstern) has a pattern similar to this. Drafting it out in radials like the Spicy Spiral Table runner might work better than rings if you simplify the design a little.
It looks a lot like some of quilts in the Bella Bella book? I am not sure of the name but they are circular and very intricate but you can order paper piecing sheets to help.

yep, i have the Bella Bella book, quilts made from tile floor designs. someone could figure out that for you on EQ6 or 7. I don't have it. or you could do it on graf paper. you only need to do 1/4 of it, then repeat that when you make it up for the other three sections. lovely photo.

I think if you got a 10 degree ruler it would be pretty easy to draft it up and make. Especially if you just made the center le moyne star medallion and appliqued because the 10 degree ruler makes round quilts with the hole in the middle you applique over or leave open for tree skirts.

What wonderful super intelligent quilters/designers we have. I would have no idea where to begin, but you gals are super quilters/designers! I marvel at all the great ideas! You gals are terrific!

that could have alot of possiblities in colors , wow I would like to see it done.

I have that exact tile inset by my front door and look at it every day and wonder the same thing. Just haven't taken time to sit down and draw it out. Someday!
Ask the tile people at the home improvement store for the patttern information. Someone has to have a pattern for the tile setters to go from to make this design.
Well....you NEED to read this book! Works already been done for you!

what about copyright laws I would really be concerned about making an exact copy of it
That will make a beautiful quilt. I can see it now, but I'm not good with picking colors. It is a great pattern. Would love to have several of the stones in my yard.
Almost all the pattern is "even" except the outer ring. I would draft the outer ring--make the pieces larger until the points of the star touches a space between the outer curved sections. Then it shouldn't be too hard to draft and make the pieces fit. Good luck and let us see the finished product.

That would be a gorgeous stained glass window quilt. I love this design.
copyright of floor tiles?
If I counted correctly -
There is an 8-pointed star in the center - going from the center to the outside First row of 'squarish' tiles - 20 Next row of tiles - 28 Row of skinny rectangular tiles - 48 Largish square tiles - 24 Diamond tiles - 24 Then I stopped counting A circle has 360 degrees - I think I would use 24 as my 'starting number' for making a design 'in the style of' - 360 divided by 24 would equal 15 degrees per segment. 16 'segments' would be easier, because then the circle could be folded to get the divisions. |
Also, put the photo to black and white, print out, highlight carefully the lines because if you squiggle, it will show, then take to copy place to have enlarged to a good size then cut yourself some templates and go to work. If you are wanting it really large, just enlarge 1/4 of it and then you can do four times and get a queen out of it. that is what I do and it has worked well. One of mine placed in the fair taking first on modern design. have fun.
I agree, this will make a stunning stained glass quilt. Be sure to give us progress reports as you go along. Good luck.

I have a friend who works at Lowes and he told me that all these patio designs are straight out of Quilt pattern books. his Momma is a beautiful quilter for over 60 yrs -so he recognizes all of them. I know I've seen this one in a quilt book at the library recently. I'll try to find it and let you know which book it is
I couldn't make a pattern but. that would make an absolutely beautiful quilt block. a big quilt of this blocks would really make a gorgeous quilt. Good luck figuring it out.
Definitely. There are a couple of quilt book authors who have done tile: Christine Porter and the author of the Bella Bella books.
I saw this same design and the first thought I had was that it would make a great quilt design.
Okay, you all get this pattern going and then share it with us!
The tiles in the borders around the star look square or rectangle to me, with the extra space to make the increasingly larger circles being provided by more grout space at the outer edges and less at the inner edges. So if using fabric instead of grout, either your squares/rectangles would have to distort at the outer edges, or your "background" pieces would have to adjust, depending on what method you are using (stained glass vs. just pieced shapes). Interesting project! Let us know if you draft it out, 'cause I've seen some sunflower centers and camelias I'd like to reproduce!
try this patchwork pattern maker out and see if it can give you a good start to turning this into a quilt pattern. good luck.
Wow! Thanks for sharing. I have EQ7 and I keep trying, but I can do it on paper faster than that. In about 10 minutes I printed out a pattern. I might have to go back and twek it, put WOW

No clue but it is a lovely piece of tile - I really like the use of the colors to bring out the design. If you make something like that please keep us posted!
Maybe you could use a New York Beauty pattern/template to help build the center circles? I*ve seen several free ones when Googling.
Wow! Not one I'll ever try to make. Don't have the skill or patience.
