can this ruler be saved>

yesterday while at my new "clubhouse" i was putting my sewing machine in the trunk of the car and had my big 16 inch square ruler on top of my sewing case. As i was closing the trunk it slipped, i heard a snap (Oh no!) and looked. the ruler had slipped and cracked down one side. Is it possible to take it somewhere and possibly get it cut into pieces that I could salvage - I was thinking making it into 1, 2, and 2-1/2 inch sections various things like binding or cutting small squares?

My boss broke her 6 1/2" x 24 1/2" ruler in two a couple of years ago. She just used packaging tape on both sides and it works ok. Not as solid as before, but useable.

ragqueen03 05-23-2012 04:00 AM

it looks like a clean break (kinda curved) but i thought of super glue - i can't make it any worse than it already is right?

brushandthimble 05-23-2012 04:03 AM

I broke a long ruler, DH took it to the saw and straighten the broken ends and now I have two. One was almost square and I gave it away. I still use the rectangle one, double checking the measurements, think they start at 7 instead of 1 LOL

Oh, that would drive my perfectionistic side crazy. I'd run to you-know-where with a coupon for a new one in a heartbeat, even thought it's thirteen miles each way!

My SIL works with acrylic and when I cracked my 12 1/2" ruler I had him cut it into usable squares - 7", 2", 2 1/2". He has the right kind of saw to do it. Ask around someone may know of someone.

sounds like a GREAT reason to go shopping !!!! who knows you may find more goodies you were bargaining for.. lol..

QuiltE 05-23-2012 06:58 AM

Any glass shop should be able to cut it for you.

I wouldn't mess around with trying to patch it back together with crazy glue or duct tape ... it'd cause you too many problems. Though getting it cut into other sizes would be a perfect win-win ... and then go buy yourself a new 16" square ... or perhaps a larger one!

If it can't be cut exactly straight enough to use for fabric it can be cut for bottoms of a tote or purse.

When I broke mike, I think my husband used Gorilla Super Glue on it and it has held up great.

sharon b 05-23-2012 11:33 AM

I have one that broke on one corner- I just use the other corners for squaring up smaller squares - also can still use the good edge for cutting :)
Then I went and bought another one

I don't know if it would work, but Hancocks has their rulers and mats on sale for 40% off the would be what I would do. Maybe you could get someone to cut it down and use it for smaller ruler

I have used crazy glue and glued them back together. I then take a nail file and some the excess glue off the edges so it doesnt hang on the fabric. I did glue it on a piece of marble so that it was nice and flat and smooth, still use those rulers quite often for it is one of my favourites.

I broke one end off a very expensive ruler. It has a sliding part so you can set it and then just butt up against the edge of the fabric. works great, I will have to try the gorilla glue. It still works, but now is shorter and the pin holding the slider is just barely on there. smile...Really love that ruler.....

Try a hardware store or glass shop. I dropped one on the garage floor and it took a chunk out of the corner. Went to the hardware store & he used a cutter or something and made it a straight, angled cut.

Time for a shopping trip. A glass shop should be able to cut it into manageable sizes from what's left. Sooooo sorry! I know how much I love my rulers.

I broke a pretty hand turned bowl that was put together in slices. My dh used gorilla super glue to glue one slice onto the other slice. Trouble was he thought if a little was good, a lot would be great. Did you know that super gorilla glue grows. We had glue coming out on all sides of the bowl. What was a pretty decorative bowl looked like a big glob. LOL.

Try "Gorilla Glue". I have used it on plastic and it holds well. If you use it don't uses too much because it expands as it drys. and don't get it on yourself or clothing. It won't come off.

I broke one of my rulers about five years ago, used the packaging tape (clear - 2-1/2" wide) on both sides - and I'm still using it.

I broke my 15 inch square in half a while back. Someone on QB suggested Superglue. It was a clean break so I carefully lined up the 2 pieces wrong side up on my table. When I had them perfect, I ran a long piece of clear tape along the crack, I then flipped the ruler back over and brought the ruler over to the table edge. I carefully used the tape on the back as a hinge and opened up the crack and ran a bead of the superglue along the edge. I quickly slid the whole ruler back up on the table and held it in place for a few minutes making sure all the edges by the break were still perfect(they must be aligned perfectly so the cutter doesn't snag) I put a book on either side of the glue (away from the crack) and left it overnight. My ruler is still going strong and it's been months of regular use.

ragqueen03 05-30-2012 07:11 PM

dh took the small end that broke and made me an2-1/2 by 12 ruler. but i took it to the local hardware store to see if they could cut it - he was afraid he wouldn't be able to do it without damaging it so he kept and is giving it to the local glass and mirror guy when he comes in in the next day or two. i had them cut it into an 8-1/2 square for squaring blocks and also a 5 1/2 inch for making some large "charms" if he could do it . said i would have it by next monday or tuesday! hardware guy said the glass guy would probably do him a favor and cut it so i am hoping it isn't too $$$$. have i mentioned how much i LOVE living in a small town - no city life for me where no one knows who their neighbor is!

I would not use Gorilla glue because it does expand and that would throw off the measurements. A thin layer of crazy glue would work out better.. I learned the hard way about the gorilla glue expanding and would not use it on a ruler for that reason. Sorry to hear your ruler snapped.

oldbalt99 06-01-2012 12:10 AM

I've saved two rulers with clear crazy glue and sandwich bags. Follow the instructions like moisten both sides of the ruler, and apply glue. You need some place where no one will bother it as it dries. Place the ruler on a plastic bag, and one bag over it. wait twenty-four hours and peel off the plastic. some will stay on, it fuses at the crack, but while there is the line of the crack, you will have a strong transparent seal.

cheryl222 06-01-2012 06:50 AM

That's what I have done several times after dropping on hard tile floor. Gorrilla glue will hold it forever. Just don't forget to wet the 2 edges before sticking together as the directions say.

Got my ruler back today!!!! The owner of the hardware store delivered it to me at work today - how sweet was that! I was able to get and 8-1/2 in square (for my rag quilts!) and then another piece 5 -!/2 square for slightly larger "charms" i am so happy and even better there was no charge for it! Gotta love small towns where people try to help each other out! At least now I can use it where as before i was't able to.
