For some reason I can't remember the name of this block. I know I have it in one of my gadrillion quilting books but I can't find it!

toomanytoomuch 04-23-2012 12:16 PM

I know it as "Wheel of Mystery" it may have a few other names, as most blocks do! :)

Donna H-M 04-23-2012 12:20 PM

Yup Kitsie, I loved the color too! Red is my favorite. I think I will make one in red but with different borders.

Thank you everyone for pointing me to the pattern!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like most tops I know this under 3 names, Winding Ways, Wheel of Mystery and the Shamrock. But mostly under the name Winding Ways

Lots of times, it's because someone wrote up a pattern and is trying to sell it. If they name it "XYZ Quilt" and an enterprising (but inexperienced) quilter writes down the name and googles it, it won't show up except for sale. However, if the seller actually calls it "Winding Ways", it's a traditional pattern and you can google it and find tons of free patterns and instructions online.

At least, that's MY guess, for what it's worth. Lol.

Gorgeous quilt! Someday I hope to put this on my 'to do' list...some day.

Sew N Tune 04-24-2012 05:03 AM

That's beautiful. I love the way the blocks evolve into out laying circles around them.

riutzelj 04-24-2012 08:51 AM

guilts often have varying names, depending on geographic location, and historical context. If you think about it, there are basic shapes and configurations for patchwork quilts, so the odds are that over time, the same pattern will evolve in different places and different times, thus a different name. Particularly with the older quilts that pre-date the reference capacities we have today for patterns etc.

Hope you find your winding ways pattern!

It's called Winding Ways. I made a bedspread in this pattern only it is black and white. It is a pretty easy pattern to make once you get comfortable with sewing curves.

Latrinka 04-25-2012 04:16 AM

I don't know, but it sure is pretty!

helenquilt 04-25-2012 05:04 AM

If you aren't comfortable with curves when you start, I bet you are by the time you are done!
Gorgeous quilt and the little checked border strip is cute too

I used to make clothes many many lifetimes ago so sewing curved seams is not a problem for me :)

MS/L.A. G.R.I.T.S. 05-01-2012 11:56 AM

I am starting to make a B/W for my GD. The Winding Ways dies for the Accuquilt Go are available. They make an 8" square.
