Can someone tell me the name of this block? Thank you!
 

This beautiful block was [ATTACH=CONFIG]404497[/ATTACH]made by a quilting friend but she doesn't know the name of it. Can someone help? Thank you!

this is a Lemoyne star.

Carpenter Star or Carpenter Wheel.

carpenter's star. can be made easily with half square triangles. any size.

As nativetexan stated, you can make it from any size HST. Here's one I made with 12" squares:

A carpenter's wheel is 8 squares by 8 squares. This is a simple 8 point star.

It's a LeMoyne star.

But this was made wth 5" squares...2 of each of 3 different colors. Then they are sewn into 3 squares.....each of the 6 squares sewn RST to one of the other colors....giving you the 3 squares. They are each then cut on the diagonal each way and then sewn together. It is then finished with 4 corner squares.

I'm sorry if this sounds confusing but I don't know how else to explain it....but it was such a simple block to make.

Marcia Hohn at Quilterscache calls it "Starflower". Easy block and looks so good.

Your friend's block is lovely. The high contrast makes it pop. Others can tell you the name, although it seems like every block has multiple names!

Carpenter's Star quilt has a Leymone star as its center. The Carpenter's Star is the whole quilt.

I thought it was Lemoyne Star when you made it with diamonds. Or other parts of the country, Lemon Star. Every block has multiple names and a proud history handed down from our ancestors.

Nope, not confusing. It's still the same block, lemoyne star, she just used a different method of constructing the half square triangles. The construction method used for a patch doesn't change the name of the block. Lots of people use this method whenever they need a half square triangle, especially for pinwheels. The thing you need to be careful of is that when you use this method, you are left with bias edges on the HST blocks. So the fabric needs to be starched really well and the squares handled gently.

Jenny Doan has easy way to make, she uses 10" blocks buty ou could make blocks any size to get size you want. Not hard to do and looks so good. As I lived in TX for a number of years and consider it home, anything with a star catches my eye.

I've always known it as the Lemoyne Star, but it probably has many other names - check with Quilter's cache to check it out.

This is an Eight Pointed Star block made with HST. You can see that the star points have 2 parallel sides of one length and the other 2 sides are a different length.

On a LeMoyne Star (also eight pointed) all sides of the points are the same length, thus making a diamond. Sometimes the LeMoyne Star has the diamond divided down the longways center which of course leads to a piecing nightmare of 16 seams coming together in the middle.

You didn't say what size but it looks to me to be a wall hanging and if so the pattern you want is by Country Threads and is called StarQuilt#428. Basically it is a large Lemoyne Star but the measurements and wonderful directions make an easy 48" sq . I have made several from this pattern and it truely is quick and easy with a big bang. I have had the pattern for several years so I'm not sure if it is still available-maybe a search on the web will be helpful.

Love the tutorials! I have several pieces of old fabric that I plan on cutting into 10" squares...What a quick, fun way to use them up!

I think "starflower" is probably correct but my first thought was "lemoyne star". What it comes down to is that these blocks change their name as time goes by. Look how many names churn dash has. I googled star flower and got many hits on this block with that name and then tried lemoyne star and got the same thing. So there you go!

Missouri Quilts on YouTube has a demo called the big star quilt. She demos in a 10 inch and 5 inch. VERY easy the way she does it.

Lemoyne Star is made with 45* diamonds. This, Carpenter's star, is easier to make and I like it just as well.
