Can you always use glue for applique?

When a pattern calls for fusing applique can you use the school glue method instead? It seems like the glue method is faster, easier and cleaner. When I first tried applique recently I experimented with some fusing material I had(don't remember brand). It made the applique stiff and "crinkly" sounding where the glued applique was pliable and not "crinkly".
So, instead of fusing can you glue or are there times when you should fuse?

The fusibles help to control the edge of the appliqué and you would get less fraying after washing because it is stuck to the fabric. Now if are going to do a satin stitch the edge of the appliqué then using glue will be fine. It would also work fine for raw edge appliqué that you don't mind the appliqué edge fraying.

I agree with Tartan. I have used Heat N Bond lightweight and I find that it is soft and pliable. Often I cut the inside of the bonding off before attaching it to the fabric leaving a fat 1/4" around the outside edge of the fabric. If you plan to sew a satin stitch on the applique edges, then maybe gluing would work better for you.

That's how I do fusible webs too...just cut out a window frame, then fuse to fabric...much softer feel.......maybe you used the wrong kind...that is one that is more for crafts...heavier and not meant to be sewed.......

Sharon Schamber says that the "Elmers' School Glue" is actually a starch and is completely water soluable. I have used this for years without any issues.

Thank you all so much for the information. I will be stitching around the applique so will use the glue method.

I use glue for other things but would not use it for applique. Shop around and find a fusible that is lighter weight. There are a lot of choices out there.
